The Indy 500 that dates to 1911 is one of the few motorsports events in the United States that is older than the Daytona 200…that dates to 1937. Ed Kretz won the first race…and had excitement…he missed a dog that ran in front of him on the course when he was going over 100mph..and twice the oncoming tide narrowed the south turn and he fell…losing only about six seconds per spill…he won by 5 miles.
Joe Petrali ran 136 mph through the measured mile on a Harley in 1937…a Daytona record that still stands.
