In the book “Colin Edwards: The Texas Tornado”, the author, Bertie Simmonds, says “Colin has vowed that he will quit bike racing before his 33rd birthday.” (That would be February 2007) “His riding style, developed on 250s but with a solid background in dirt competition as a kid, is deceptively fast. He rarely looks out of shape, instead its an almost clinically clean line with the bike balanced on the very last atom of the razor’s edge between ultimate speed and crashing.”
Many consider the 2002 World Superbike Title fight with Troy Bayliss the best ever. Colin reeled off 9 straight wins to turn a 59 point deficit to an 11 Point Title win. “Fans had witnessed the most amazing comeback in the history of two wheeled motorsport.” Bertie Simmonds.
In 2002 World Superbike Season, Colin finished 4th in the first race at Valencia, Spain…then cranked off 25 Straight podium finishes, including 11 wins (9 in a row) 10 second place, and 4 3rds. Laguna Seca was the turning point in his season. After finishing 3rd in Race One…he went on to win the next nine races of the season…and the Championship (In the winter of 2001 through the spring of 2002, Colin racked up 12,000 miles around the Michelin test track at racing speed. Practice doesn’t make perfect. It only makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect).
Colin’s wife, Alyssia, has this to say about her husband. “I think the reason we stayed together so long is the fact that Colin is just the same guy he was when we met.” “I’ve seen so many people in the race business who as soon as they become famous they become a**holes or treat people bad for no reason. Colin’s not like that, he just a normal guy who thinks about sex all the time!”
When Colin crashes she says…”Immediately when I see him crash, I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God, is he okay?” Then he gets up and I’m really pissed, thinking:”Why did you do that? We need those points, man.”
Colin says, “I’m a believer in the fact that I come from the old school. If you actually ride your ass off, you will eventually get what you deserve.”
“Man, we’re not trying to broker world peace or nothin’, we’re just trying to sort out things so a bunch of guys can go around and ride in circles and stuff.” (On contract negotiations.)
Troy Bayliss says about Colin, “precise and smooth. He has always believed that a true champion never gives up and if you’re not winning you’re not happy. He’s real easy to talk to and there’s no bullsh*t with Colin Edwards.”
