SPEED Test Drive: The Ford F-150 EcoBoost™ Engine Torture Test
In order to prove that their new V6 EcoBoost engine could surpass larger V8s, Ford pulled a randomly selected EcoBoost engine off the production line at their Cleveland plant, and ran it through a gauntlet of over-the-top performance tests. Beginning with the dyno-stress test – which simulates over 150,000 miles of driving, towing big loads up tough grades, and extreme, rapid temperature changes – the engine was put through five tests in total, culminating in a live teardown of the abused engine at the Detroit International Auto Show.
Join SPEED Test Drive host Tommy Kendall as he interviews EcoBoost Program Manager Jim Mazuchowski about several of the torture tests: hauling 55 tons of timber up steep dirt roads in the forests of Oregon, towing two stock cars around a NASCAR® track at full-throttle for 24 hours, and the dyno-stress test. Kendall will also join off-road racer Mike McCarthy in his Arizona shop to discuss the last of the torture tests – the grueling Baja 1000 off-road race - and test drive an F-150 on some of McCarthy’s favorite Arizona desert trails.
