Dollar says his partnership with Moss has been a bittersweet one, although mutually beneficial, because Moss had been so optimistic heading into the new NFL season, only to suffer the stinging blow of losing Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to injury in the season-opening game.
“He (Moss) had worked tremendously hard in the off-season to be prepared, knowing this was going to be another record-setting season,” Dollar said. “Kind of like us - we had run for a championship, come up second in points three years in a row and then you kind of fall on some tough times. Because it's a team effort, Randy was really motivated in talking to us about building toward the future and utilizing this as a building year toward our goal of winning a championship. How the twist of fate is, the NFL season starts and Randy is poised to set more records and their quarterback goes down in the first quarter of the first game.
“So, it was just totally devastating to Randy and how we relate to it is it would be like losing our driver in the first 10 laps in (season-opening)
Daytona,” Dollar added. “So it's kind of been, ‘Hey, remember those motivational speeches you gave us? Now is the time for you to step up and be the captain of the team. Be the leadership up there.”
While several NFL players and former players briefly have tested the waters of NASCAR ownership, Moss says his NASCAR venture is a long scoring drive, not a Hail Mary.
“You know most of those guys started out at the top (NASCAR Sprint Cup Series) and I am a true believer in the theory that you have to crawl before you walk,” Moss said. “I wanted to start out at the bottom, in the Truck Series, and teaming up with David Dollar and I think he’s seen the passion that I have to be an owner. I think that my passion for just being a winner and by any means necessary to make sure that happens.”
Dollar says his and Moss’ ultimate goal is to field two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams in conjunction with two Truck Series teams within five years, but immediate focus centers on continued growth of the Truck program.
