Race-car drivers generally aren’t the most introspective sorts of people, but they pretty much always know where they are in the pecking order relative to the competition and who else is running well at any given moment.
So when Kyle Busch celebrated his victory in the Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington Raceway, he already had one eye on who he will need to beat in Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, which will be televised live on SPEED.
“We just need to keep that bull’s eye on us,” said Busch after claiming his third Cup victory of the 2008 season and widening his points lead to 79 over Jeff Burton. “Guys are looking at us and worrying about us. We’re the target that they’re shooting for. Carl Edwards is good, too. He finished second tonight, so those guys are tough every week as well. We’re on top of the game for right now, but
Busch pretty much has it figured correctly. He and Edwards will be the two gunslingers favored to take home the more than $1 million first prize Saturday in the All-Star extravaganza. Each man has three Cup victories so far this season – no one else has more than one – and each has the requisite combination of skill, equipment and go-for-the-jugular tenacity needed to prevail in the All-Star format.
Last year Busch wrecked himself and his big brother Kurt going for the lead in the final segment, and it’s that kind of intensity you can expect to see under the lights Saturday. There’s a reason that the unofficial motto of the All-Star race is “checkers or wreckers” — with no points on the line and a seven-figure purse, it is the ultimate Saturday night shootout.
