A total of 24 drivers will compete in Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, where they race for a winner’s purse of more than $1 million. The race will be televised live on SPEED.

Following is a list of eligible drivers, how they got in and how their prospects shape up for Saturday night.

Kevin Harvick, 2007 Daytona 500, Daytona Beach, Fla. A defending winner with a contending team in Richard Childress Racing, Harvick is one of several drivers who is not quite as fast as Kyle Busch or Carl Edwards right now, but still has a solid shot at winning.

Matt Kenseth, 2007 Auto Club 500, Fontana, Calif. A past Coca-Cola 600 winner, Kenseth unfortunately is mired in what is shaping up to be the worst season of his career. Maybe a good finish at Darlington will help.

Jimmie Johnson, 2007 UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400, Las Vegas, Nev. Johnson has been the man at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, where he has two All-Star victories and three consecutive Coca-Cola 600 triumphs. But his Hendrick Motorsports squad is behind where they were last year. Is this the week they catch up?

Kyle Busch, 2007 Food City 500, Bristol, Tenn. Busch has been on an amazing roll this season, winning anywhere and everywhere. He is the clear favorite heading into this race, but will have to show more discipline in this race than he has in years past. Then again, he’s already grown up quite a bit in 2008.

Jeff Burton, 2007 Samsung 500, Fort Worth, Texas Burton is an intriguing choice; he is second in points because
he has completed every lap run so far this season, but his RCR Chevys clearly aren’t as fast as the Joe Gibbs Toyotas. Still, if the top two or three cars takes each other out, Burton could surprise just as his teammate Kevin Harvick did last year.

Jeff Gordon, 2007 Subway Fresh 500, Phoenix, Ariz. Gordon is a three-time All-Star winner and won the fall race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway last year, but his team is struggling to come to grips with the new car at fast tracks. No longer the favorite, he can’t be ignored.

Casey Mears, 2007 Coca-Cola 600, Concord, N.C. Twenty-seventh in points and without a top-five finish this season, a Mears victory would be an even bigger upset than his Coca-Cola 600 victory last season.

Martin Truex Jr., 2007 Autism Speaks 400, Dover, Del. Truex, a two-time Nationwide Series champ, is a driver who could surprise with a victory almost anytime now. So far this season, though, his Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevy has had better finishes at smaller tracks.

Carl Edwards, 2007 Citizens Bank 400, Brooklyn, Mich. Along with Kyle Busch, Edwards is one of the clear-cut favorites to win on Saturday night. He has three victories already this year, all on high-speed intermediate tracks. Edwards might end Saturday night with a trademark backflip.

Juan Pablo Montoya, 2007 Toyota/Save Mart 350, Sonoma, Calif. Another longshot, Montoya had a second-place finish at Talladega a couple of weeks back, but aside from that, his best finish this year is 13th. He might be missing the Indy 500 by now.
