Then on Lap 212, Busch entered Turn 1 on the outside and came down on Earnhardt on the bottom, the left-rear quarter panel of his Toyota making contact with Earnhardt’s right front. That sent Busch’s car spinning around and backwards into the outside wall, much to the delight of the legion of Earnhardt fans in attendance. Busch and Earnhardt, of course, tangled here in the spring, with Busch knocking Earnhardt out of the lead with two laps to go.
Earnhardt had the lead on the Lap 217 restart ahead of Stewart, Johnson, Harvick and Hamlin. Busch, meanwhile, fell to 38th, two laps down.
Tony Stewart was about to pass Earnhardt for the lead, when Sadler brought out the next caution on Lap 228, with his second flat right-front tire. The top 16 cars all stayed out, with the order on the Lap 233 restart being Earnhardt, Stewart, Johnson, Harvick and Bowyer.
On Lap 236, Stewart took the lead, pulling Johnson with him into second place and dropping Earnhardt to third. Seven laps later, Busch crashed again to bring another yellow out. This time, though, Busch got a shove from Sadler.
Most of the cars that pitted on Lap 229 stayed out, so the top five became David Reutimann, Mark Martin, Martin Truex Jr., Michael Waltrip, Michael McDowell and Regan Smith. All told, 15 cars stayed out, taking over the spots up front.
Brian Vickers had a right-front tire go flat and send him into the wall at Lap 297, sending the field scurrying down pit road for what was expected to be the final time. The order out this time was Reutimann, Stewart, Burton, Earnhardt, Martin, Truex, Johnson, Hamlin, Casey Mears and McDowell.
Once the race restarted on Lap 305, Stewart began pressuring Reutimann for the lead. But the lapped car of Kyle Busch jumped between Reutimann and Stewart, allowing the Michael Waltrip Racing driver to pull out a lead of about half a second.
Then on Lap 317, Bobby Labonte got loose in Turn 2, spinning out and taking out Bill Elliott and Carl Edwards with him. The green flew on Lap 321, with top three of Reutimann, Stewart and Earnhardt breaking clear.
On
Lap 348, Stewart finally got the lead back from Reutimann, who had 104 laps in this race after only leading a total of nine laps in his 52 previous Sprint Cup starts.
Scott Riggs spun on Lap 356, bringing out a caution and sending all the leaders down pit road for the day’s most crucial pit stop. Winning the race of pit road was Martin Truex Jr., who took just two tires, followed by Johnson, Stewart, Earnhardt and Burton.
Johnson made the lead pass on Lap 365, taking Stewart with him into second place. On Lap 369, Paul Menard and Patrick Carpentier wrecked each other out of Turn 2, bringing out the 14th caution of the race.
The track went green on Lap 375, and Johnson was off from there as we scored his fourth victory of the season.
