And although he’s been hot of late, Biffle is not especially sanguine about his chances at Pocono. “Pocono has historically not been one of my best tracks,” he said. “We had a good run there a couple of years ago and were in contention to win. We ended up with a sixth-place finish but I’d be happy if we could just have a run like that again this weekend. We’ve got momentum behind us right now and we just need to keep it. A top-five or even a solid top-10 finish in Pocono this weekend would keep the momentum going and then we can get ready for Michigan which is one of my favorite tracks.”

Two other drivers to keep an eye out for this weekend are Denny Hamlin, who as a rookie in 2006 swept both poles and both races at Pocono in a truly remarkable performance, and Kurt Busch.

Yes, Kurt Busch, not Kyle. The elder Busch has two victories and two runner-up finishes in his last five Pocono races and desperately needs to start accumulating good finishes if he is to have any hope of qualifying for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Busch currently sits 21st in points, 229 back of 12th place, which is the final transfer spot for the Chase.

For his part, Hamlin ought to be tough, too. In four starts at Pocono his worst finish is sixth, his worst qualifying spot is sixth and he’s led 283 laps here.

And if you’re
looking for a real dark horse on Sunday, consider Yates Racing’s David Gilliland, who turned in the fastest lap on the first day of the Pocono test. “We had a great test down there,” Gilliland said. “Pocono has not been my strongest track. Last year we kind of struggled there a little bit, but I feel really good and after a great test like that, it gives the whole team a lot of confidence as well as myself going back there. I had a lot of fun. The track was fun for me for the first time. I feel really good about our car in race trim. We weren’t quite as good as we would like to be in qualifying trim, but we learned a lot of stuff and I feel real confident that when we go back there, we’re gonna have a great race.”
