“I had one opportunity and he kind of closed the door on me a little bit and I figured, ‘No sense pressing it right now, I’ve got plenty more laps to go,’” Biffle said. “And then it just got tighter and tighter as it went and I never got a chance to get back at him.”
Kahne seemed as surprised to win as the record event crowd at LMS. “I wouldn’t have believed it until about Lap 60 or so,” Kahne said. “At that point, our car was getting better and better. We were making the right adjustments. We made one small adjustment with the track bar and left the tires. I knew we were quick the longer the runs went. I thought if we could get by some cars, the car was good enough to win.”
And indeed he was. Kahne raced from 24th and last place to 13th in the first segment and once it in front in the final one, his speed was as good or better than anyone on the track.
