ROUSHKATEERS ROCK Roush Fenway Racing has always performed best as a team at 1.5-mile racetracks, and in Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV, the team again put on an exceptionally stout showing. Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth finished second and third, respectively, in their Roush Ford Fusions, while Biffle and Carl Edwards each won one of the four race segments.

It was a strong team performance that left both drivers encouraged. Biffle said adjustments made at the midway 10-minute break between the second and third segments was the key to his strong run. “We got the big break and we took a look at what Matt was doing and Carl (Edwards) and made some adjustments to our car – pretty aggressive,” said Biffle. “We wouldn’t have done something like that in a normal race and loosened it up a bunch. When the green flag dropped, I mean, man alive, I could not believe how fast my car was. It was unbelievable. I could just drive it anywhere – on the mat – drive it in the corner and just hold it to the floor.”

“I feel like were back,” said Kenseth, who has suffered a disappointing season after encountering crashes in several races earlier this season. “For us it was almost like a test and it was a good morale booster, I think, for the team
and a big confidence booster. We haven’t really been running very good this year and when we have run good, we’ve had a lot of problems. We were kind of back, I thought anyway, back in form a little bit.”

HENDRICK NOT MUCH OF A FACTOR Lowe’s Motor Speedway is the home track to the powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports team, which is based just a few miles away from the Concord, N.C., track. Teammates Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have six NASCAR Sprint All-Star races victories among them and Casey Mears won the Coca-Cola 600 here last year.

But in Saturday night’s Sprint All-Star Race XXIV, Johnson was the best of the Hendrick cars, finishing fourth by gambling for no tires on his final pit stop, while Earnhardt was eighth, Mears 13th and Gordon 15th. All told, it was far from the performance the team hoped for. “We are learning a lot,” said Johnson. “We are making gains and I am happy to do that. I am happy to have a good run here at Lowe’s.”

“Our car wasn’t quite as good as it needed to be at the end, and even if I had been up front, I don’t know how the car would have reacted,” said Earnhardt. “It was so loose at the end I couldn’t go. I was just kind of hanging on.”
