As with the new Speed Triple, this year’s ST uses the new 1050cc engine, and, while the spec sheets only show a gain of five horsepower, the triple also gains three foot-pounds of torque for a total of 77 @ 5000rpm. Combined with the freer revving nature of the new motor, and the more visceral roar from the under tail exit exhaust system, the bike instantly feels much faster. It also shifts a lot more easily thanks to a revised gearbox and clutch that features the same anti-back lash gear found in the Speed Triple. Throw in a shorter wheelbase, quicker steering geometry and wider bars, and the new ST also transitions more easily in the turns. The net result of all these changes is a motorcycle that encourages sporting behavior in a way the previous model never did.

Later this year we will take a couple of Sprints on tour in Scotland, so I am not going to comment too much on the bikes long distance manners in this review, although the short time I spent on the highway hinted at good things to come. Rolling effortlessly along at 4,000 rpm at the legal limit, the big triple will accelerate effortlessly if you need to pass slower traffic without the need for a down shift. Of course, with that addictive shriek from the exhaust, it was far more fun dropping
to fourth and watching the horizon start to blur, but too much of that behavior will result in not passing Go and collecting your $200.

On the first day of my ride it was extremely cold and damp, which gave a great opportunity to evaluate the bike’s weather protection. The sharp, angular looking fairing doesn’t do much to protect the digits, or the arms, and with my bulky waterproof clothing pushing my legs out into the weather, the footpegs began to feel cramped. With Scotland able to yield some pretty nasty weather any time of year, I have made a large note to self to make sure the trusty Gerbing heated vest and gloves are packed this summer. The ride position is comfortable, with just a moderate stretch to the bars, although the seat might be a little restricting for touring duties. It works extremely well on the attack in sport mode, it just doesn’t allow you to adjust your position very far forward or back on the highway. At 31.7 inches from the ground, it is also a tad higher than the old Sprint’s saddle, and the passenger portion sits a good bit higher yet.
