Kawasaki Teryx RUV: Versatility, Power and Performance

The heart of the Teryx is the motor, a 749cc 90 degree V-twin beast mounted mid-chassis that supplies torque in abundance. This is the same powerplant that powers the highly regarded Brute Force 750 4x4 and works equally well in this application The power is transferred to the ground on the Teryx by a very slick continuously variable transmission that always seems to be making the most of available traction in all conditions. Four wheel drive is operated by a toggle switch on the dash making switching back and forth from 2WD to 4WD a breeze. For those times when the going gets really rough the Teryx also features a convenient hand lever that controls the Variable Front Differential allowing the driver to distribute the torque equally to both front wheels to maximize traction when needed. This setup came in handy a couple of times and really works well.

When it comes to slowing down the Teryx is equipped with a pair of 200mm disc units up front with 27mm twin piston calipers and sports a sealed wet brake in the rear. Brake action was
smooth and predictable and combined with the stock Maxxis 26 inch tires never had any trouble stopping the 1,276 pound machine.

Ergonomics and rider comfort are excellent on the Teryx with twin bucket seats, retractable three point seatbelts (just like your car), a padded steering wheel and easy to reach controls. The LE model adds a digital meter with dual trip meters, clock and hour meters. It also features a half windshield, hard top and retractable cup holders (just like your mini-van). Scratch resistant Thermo-Plastic Olefin bodywork is used throughout and even after a long hard day of testing by our crew of gonzo journalists the Teryx cleaned up nicely. Dual 40W headlights make night driving a non-issue and an 8 gallon fuel tank makes sure you will have no problem getting back to the trailhead.

Check out the SPEED Test Drive of the Teryx and get the schedule for the next airing.
