After 17 rounds of drama, the 2008 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship has finally been decided -- and it wasn’t a cakewalk for anyone. San Manuel Yamaha’s Chad Reed started the season off with two falls in the mud of Anaheim I that resulted in two fractured hands. And then, after reeling off a slew of wins despite the hand problems, Reed encountered a few major issues, including a crash in Atlanta, a bike failure three turns from the finish in Daytona, and a crash in practice in Detroit that resulted in a broken scapula and bruised lungs. As it turns out, his performance that night may have decided the championship, as he soldiered through to a 12th-place finish while his championship rival Kevin Windham of the Geico Powersports Honda squad could only muster third.
As Windham only gained 11 points on that weekend -- and he trailed by 27 going into the race -- it set up a championship where Reed
Reed managed second two races in a row coming into the finale in Las Vegas, and then went into the main event 10 points ahead of Windham. Windham held Reed off in their Heat race to win, and then started near the front in the main event.
Holeshot artist (and fellow Honda rider) Davi Millsaps inexplicably held Windham up for the first three laps of the main, and then when Windham finally found his way by, Reed had already caught up to fourth behind another Honda rider, Andrew Short, who ran third.
Millsaps then crashed out of second place on the fifth lap, handing the spot to Short, and third to Reed, and Reed seemed content to ride around behind Short, who gave him a shot at the Seattle Supercross a week earlier when Reed passed Short for second on the last lap.
