Stoner was in a chirpy mood after qualifying, claiming to have finally found a comfort zone with his Ducati GP8 after reverting to some pre-season set-up ideas.
"The most important thing is that I'm in good shape in race trim and if it stays dry for the race then we should have a good battle," Stoner said. "Pedrosa and Edwards look like they are on the pace and as usual you have to expect Valentino will join in."
Rossi claims he was slowed by what he described "as a small problem" but the Italian is bristling with confidence for the race.
"I will try to get to the front immediately and then try to stay there with the other fast riders," Rossi said.
Spain's star rookie Jorge Lorenzo subjected himself more punishment with two crashes during Friday and Saturday practice, again hurting his mental and physical condition for the race.
Lorenzo will ride with small bone fractures and heavy bruising in both ankles.
"It is difficult to have confidence in these circumstances but will do it for the race," Lorenzo said. "I have a lot of pain in all my body, similar to China. I'm not perfect and the bike set-up is not perfect and I'm pushing the limit and this is when you make mistakes."
