• Pruett joined SPEED as a contributor in 2006, and now works as SPEEDtv.com s Automotive and Sportscar Racing Editor. The son of a mechanic, Pruett grew up in Northern California at his fathers two primary shops, Pruetts Olde English Garage and Park Road SAAB Service, both 15min south of San Francisco in the town of Burlingame. Growing up in the 70s and amongst a wide variety of British, German, French, Swedish and Italian cars, his love for wildly different cars was born. Following in his fathers footsteps, he learned the trade of mechanic, and also followed his fathers passion for motor racing. With memories as a 3yr old helping to pick rocks off his fathers tires in the paddock at Sears Point, the lad was raised in a healthy mix of automotive and motor racing culture, with the week days reserved for the shop, and the weekends traveling to an amateur SCCA race to watch the elder Pruett drive something odd and uniquely British--often a Ford Anglia, Ford Cortina, or a Lotus of some sorts. At 16, the junior Pruett embarked on a career in racing as a junior mechanic in the SCCA Super Vee series while still in high school, and continued forward through the ranks as lead mechanic in the Formula Atlantic series, Sports 2000, and Formula Ford 2000 series. Stepping up to the bigger ranks Pruett served as junior engineer, engineer, and team manager Indy lights, CART IMSA, and the IRL before retiring from full-time competition at the end of the 2001 IRL season. No longer making a living on the road in the Indycar circuit, Pruett turned his attention to all of the things racing team members often forfeit--college, a wife, and a normal life. With a return to normalcy, Pruett slowly dipped his toes back into racing, but concentrating more on sedan racing at the amateur and professional level, running a number of factory teams in both endurance racing and in the SPEED World Challenge series. Focusing his efforts on automotive and racing journalism in 2004, Pruett has written for numerous magazines--some even respected or read by more than a dozen people, and owns his own racing team, Marshall Pruett Motorsport Engineering (MPME) that offers a variety of services to teams, drivers, and manufacturers. Marshall and his wife Shabral live in the Bay Area.
