I've never been to a trials competition, but I've seen several exhibitions. It just astounds me that such things are possible on a motorcycle.

What is up with the "minder" guy?? If he tells him what line to take, then tell him and get the F out of the way! That would totally freak me out to have someone standing right there, watching.

Couldn't stand the punk music. rolleyes

Minders are a part of the game of trials. Out on the loop they carry all the crap that could break on the bike (handlebars, levers, etc.) along with extra food and water (events last all day). In the sections, the minder acts as an extra set of eyes on rear tire placement and keeps track of time. IIRC, riders have 1:30 to complete each section so the minder watches the time and advises the rider when he needs to turn on the afterburner. The minder also tries to catch the bike if the rider ghosts, to avoid time-consuming repairs.

That wasn't just motorcycle riding, it was magic. You see it with your own eyes, but you can't say how it was done...it just "happened."

The "minder guy" is called a "spotter." His job is there to catch the rider -- and get flattened -- if he falls. Think of him as a moving crash pad.

Most of the time, if the section isn't too hairy, the minder tries to catch the bike, not the rider. He figures the rider is a professional athlete who can roll with the punches, so to speak, but if the bike breaks, the whole effort is done until repairs can be made.

I see your point. Different target, same effect -- the spotter is still a moving crash pad. And likely to get flattened, no matter who or what lands on him.

Yup, honestly I'd rather have one of those skinny trials kids land on me than a pointy hot motorcycle...

I have always been amazed by these Trials guys, the things they do on those bikes are amazing.
