The gimmick is that it is a one off race with nothing else to tie it in other than itself.
I can see where that could very easily be seen as gimmicky.
Joe was being his typical self and just accidentally got it right.
Again, it does not make the race any less impressive.
Personally, the very nature of the track makes the participants those who do not necessarily interest me so I do not follow it with any real zeal.
But, damn those scooters are cool!!
I used to have a pic of one... I will try and find it and post up.
