I'm surprised he's getting the seat. His GP2 days were okay, but good enough to warrant an F1 ride?

Looking at his personal website it just sounds like he was visiting the team to see what an F1 team is like. Not that he will be driving for them.
That is the translation I get using Google translator at least:

I personally have never heard of the kid. Really didn't follow GP2 back in 2006 really good.

I´ve been following José´s career since 2005 and I can assure you that he is a GREAT driver. unfortunatelly he didn´t have very good seasons at Gp2 series (because he was in bad teams, but that is my opinion).
Since he went back to Argentina, he started to break records, one after another...
I love his spectacular driving style, he is always trying to win or even to reach the limits, no matter in which circunstances he is.
I think that Anderson and Windsor put an eye on him because he is a develoment driver also (and he is cheap, of course).
it would be fantastic to have this driver on F1 next year.

Is he even elligible for a FIA Superlicense though? That is my question.

Sure he is. He has run over 15,000 kms while developing the Renault on which Alonso won his titles

Jason, he should pass FIA requirement/regulation, which is...
the F1 team concerned must show that the applicant has driven at
least 300 km in a current Formula One car consistently at racing
speeds, over a maximum period of 2 days, completed not more
than 90 days prior to the application and certifi ed by the ASN of
the country in which the test took place.

There is more than just that section. Read the whole section. He hasn't raced in any FIA series in the past 2 years...and you have to have at least an FIA Class A license before you can apply for a Superlicense.

and he has held FIA superlicence before, but not this year lol.
sincerely, I think it won´t be a problem. Lopez is not in the same position as Loeb...

No Way Jose! Just Kidding, just wanted to say that. Sounds like he is decent enough, I know he wouldn't have any problem getting a superlicense. Only thing I ever heard of him before is on the Facebook USF1 page, a lot hispanic people screaming for his name on that page. So I am guessing he is pretty popular (especially relative to most of the other american names being thrown around)
