That is the date that Tony Hulman bought The Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Probably the greatest moment in motorsports history.

On what day did his idiot grandson officially light the match to burn it down?

Your link contains a nice tribute by the Indystar, but when I look at the date I realize that they cut the final paragraph a little short for a current day story. They left out the part about Tony being sacked by the board (his family), because the total failure of the IRL has become a financial burden. Or was there a different reason he was sacked?

I have no problem with Hulman buying IMS. He did save it from becoming a houseing tract. His only problem was that he, and his grandson, failed to adapt their business model to new realities.
I also think that Wilbur Shaw is an unsung hero in this saga. He not only brought Hulman and Rickenbacher togather, but he managed the Speedway for many years until his death in a plane crash.

I know of speedeng and I know he has a reputation on this board. He is not the only Chemical Engineer in the world. I am a different user -- no controversy here.

There have been a lot of great moments in motorsports history. Much of it happened outside the US. It would be hard to definitively say that buying the speedway was the GREATEST of them all. It certainly is a stand out for racing in the USA. Nascar fans would say the construction of Daytona was higher.
Not all motorsports fans have the same perspective.

When you think about it, not much happened in Europe as far as auto racing. There are a lot of tracks thruout Europe. But, here in America, there used to be short tracks numbering in the thousands. Say Chicago, there used to be 9 short tracks around.

Perhaps, but I prefer to think of May 30, 1911, the first Indy 500, as a more important date
