Screw Laguna Seca. They'll come back, the right money in their hands, when the IRL is a top series again.

It's races like Laguna that will make the IRL a top series. It's the most popular road course in America.

By what measure is Laguna the most popular road course in America? Just wondering.

I'd say the measure of popularity is how much people enjoy attending and watching races from Laguna Seca, as well as race series desire to run at the track. It's a great venue to watch a race because you can see so much of the circuit from the hillsides and, of course, the Corkscrew is unlike any other set of turns in motorsport. It's popular for TV viewers because it is such a photogenic venue and hosts the best of the best -- MotoGP World Championship, Monterey Historic and American Le Mans. Of course, it can't compette with Heartland Park when it comes to access to Walmarts and Applebees, but...

As a racer, I do love racing at Laguna more than anywhere else west of the Rockies. It has two corners (6 and 9) that are truly, epically buttocks-clenching.

But in reality, there's a strong case for Infineon being a much more challenging track. Turns 2/3/3a/4/6 in the Indycar configuration are very, very difficult to do right. The "longer" club course (without the chicane and instead the full 8/8a/9/10) is even more challenging -- in that configuration a strong argument can be made that it is the toughest track in the US.

I perfer RA to Laguna as well. It's just bigger and has some very different corners. It has long enough straights to let the cars get up some real speed.

But, it seems the management there is happy as a club track and really isn't into attracting much else. It is also close to other tracks on the schedule, so the series doesn't feel the need to do another one.

If you left the track list up the the drivers, I'd bet money that both Laguna and RA would be on the top of the list.

let them have a test at Seca and see how many people show up, Champ Car had a test before everything went south, and very successful test attendance wise.

Drop Sonoma and pair up with ALMS in October.
