The race did get a tad dull towards the end when the field got stretched out, but it was still infinitely more exciting than the last several IRL races with great overtaking moves throughout. And of course, seeing a new team in victory lane is always great to see, especially after seeing so many people out there claiming that there was absolutely no chance of it happening.
And the yet the oval diehards will STILL try to say that road courses are boring, and that this race was no better than the oval races that have preceded it. Don't believe me? I'll put money on it.
But in my opinion, this was, without a doubt, the best race of the year thus far. I don't expect much out of Toronto next week(I DESPISE that course. I can only name two street circuits that are of poorer design, and both are thankfully gone), but when we get around to Edmonton I think we can expect something even better.

The only thing wrong with this race was that it waasn't Road America. At least they used the full grand prix course, but please please lose that dumb ass chicane and quit calling it the bus stop that's in Europe. But it was a great result for two extremely deserving and nice guys I hope Dale Coyne racing wins many more with Justin wilson up!

Yes indeed, nice to see the little guy win, and I have fond memories of the Glen from the F1 days, and it was a beautiful day up there. Also agree about the "bus stop." Maybe the stock cars need that slowdown, but open wheel cars should be able to use the full straightaway. We'd camp at the end of that straight and some years, took our own scaffolding, a great place to watch the race.

The bus stop was added after the death of
JD McDuffy in a high speed crash. That chicane
is an effective speed reducer to prevent another
death in the next corner. Tommy Kendall's career
almost ended in the same corner.

And turned to the right, as well as the left.

As a CC fan, here were my impressions, for what it's worth: I am reluctantly forced to admit that the IRL folks put on a good race at the Glen. I had seen a couple bits of the recent oval races, but sadly, such things are as good as sleeping pills to me. But Watkins Glen came as a pleasant surprise.
Pro's:
The overall quality of the racing: I am forced to admit that the IRL was darn entertaining on a road course (it looks like they took a lot of pages out of the CC playbook, like the option tires, and it worked pretty well.) The race had the right mix of great drives and strategy to make it thoroughly exciting.
The setting: What can you say? Watkins Glen is holy ground, and for a good reason.
David and Goliath: Having followed the team for many years in CC, it was great to see them finally break through, especially at the expense of the Evil One, Prince of Darkness Penske.
Danica Patrick: It was nice to see her really hold her own and mix it up on a road course. I hope she continues the upward trend in that regard, like many of us fans from her early days expected.
Cons:
Marco Andretti: I lost a respect for him today, and for the officials. His stupid attempts to keep from being lapped ruined what could have been a three way fight for the lead. There's no shame in being a lap down when someone else clobbered you and cut your tire, and to act that way about it is nothing short of cowardly. It was also utterly pointless as he got lapped anyway, and got his lap back too, so he should not have been such a nuisance. Ultimately however, it's not his fault, as it doesn't look like the officials were waving the blue flag at him (at least I didn't see it on the TV. Can someone who was there tell the forum?) and that is just plain wrong. Backmarkers should never be a factor in a fight for the lead, period.
Paul Tracy: My God, he looks terrible! He looks to have put on a lot of weight since CC when under. That might have explained the mistake that took him out of the race. I hope he gets on a training regimen before Toronto.
The Start: Rolling starts blow. They are for Ovals or Amateur Night, not Grand Prix racing.
The Coverage: I wasn't excpecting it to be good, so at least I wasn't disappointed. I wish they would not cut off the podium ceremony. But it could have been a lot worse, so no worries.
Verdict: as hard as it is for me, I will watch the IRL, at least when it is on real, I mean, road circuits. If they keep delivering what they gave us fans today, then the future bodes well.
