Ok....here are some thoughts.

I have in the past moderated AOL chats and boards, TSN boards, OLN boards, SpeedVision boards and SpeedTV boards and chats. Been involved in this stuff for 15 years and love the aspect of community that can develop. I give you that background to let you know I have been through this stuff before. This is the first time I have offered to try what I am about to propose.

I haven't talked to my bosses but here is what I am willing to pitch to them if you think it will float. The software we use for the chats will allow us to give people the ability to autopost...in other words, no moderation. What I will pitch is that everyone be given the ability to autopost until they prove that they shouldn't have the privilege. That should make the chat live. I will let you know how management responds. What I can tell you is that if some irresponsible posters go crazy in the chat it will not only get their privileges revoked it will make it hard for me to continue this type of chat.

Also I want to let you know SpeedTV is in the process of looking at some changes that will completely change the face of our community. Stuff that in my 15 years I have wished for and now am excited about the potential of real community software that works and gives the users some flexibility. I'll give you more details when I can...just know that we are looking to make August a pretty cool month!

The chat suggestion sounds reasonable, but my limited experience makes me think that the trolls will be out in force. Unless the user has a static IP that you can identify and ban, they will likely re-register and come back for more. That said, it is likely still worth a try. smile

I'm not sure that site "changes" would include the forum, but if so, though I would like to see the glitches taken out of the current forum (e.g. time to refresh), I'm not sure I would like to see a complete change. It was painful when it was last done.

Any changes to a new forum would be done with tried and true software, relatively pain free grin

I like the chat idea, and I'm hopeful that it would work, I'm just not sure it would. There's a chat I go to sometimes for NASCAR races and there's never usually any problems, but when there are, they're dealt with quickly by those with the power. What seems reasonable to me is to make the chats monitored by at least one administrator when they're live. That way any troublemakers don't last for any length of time.

Just an update for those that missed yesterdays chat:

We are still looking for people willing to step up and help out.

We have discussed having a racing chat open for the entire weekend. If we do this we will post a schedule on the boards(possibly in this sticky) as to the schedule for the weekend. The chat will be in an 'Open' status when there is on track activity, and interest to chat about it. (i.e. Practice, Quals, and the Race)

I think the chat idea is fantastic.
