I agree - the '60s through '80s were a very fertile period for road racing, and it will be hard to get it back (FYI, I started following IMSA and Group C in the mid '80s). Basically, I think the problem is that you have 2 forms of racing (F1 internationally, NASCAR in the US) which are sucking out all the oxygen for the other forms, and, as you mentioned, all forms have gotten so commercial that megabucks are required to compete. Maybe Grand Am is onto something in terms of cost containment, but it's never captured my interest very much.

It's the way formats have split into separate series in the past ten to fifteen years that annoys me. Nobody is benefitted; everybody loses in the end.

Racingsportscars.com is incredibly absorbing for anyone into GTP, Group C, or earlier forms of sportscar racing.
