It's underpowered and it sounds like s***. One of the biggest reasons that there's no passing in the IRL.

ok man i get it. you don't care for the powerplant that powers the irl field. that's fine. i put here for those who do like honda and the technology involved. personally, i don't agree with you. i like the way it sounds, looks and performs. it's a good engine in my opinion.

I think that any of the negative qualities of the engine are really due to the spec against which it was designed and built. It had only so much displacement, running on a certain fuel, with a certain rev limit, and other parameters (do they specify bore/stroke or spacing between bores?). The output and noise are functions of that. Honda designed the best engine they could within those parameters.

Don't hate the engine, hate the spec.

The single engine and it's sound wouldn't be bothersome if it could be tweaked to have enough power so that on the road and street circuits the lap times were equal to or (preferably) slightly better than those of the CCWS. And that's not to knock on the old CCWS engines/series or the turbos. It's just that this series should now have the fastest cars. Really, how much HP needs to be added in order to make up a difference of about 3 seconds at places like Toronto and Edmonton? It seems like that shouldn't be that difficult. Is it that creating the extra what ever it takes to make it go faster is too difficult or expensive or is it that the ICS drivers as a whole weren't talented enough to run at the CCWS speeds (I don't believe that to be the case) and the series just didn't want engines that would be that quick? Again, not trying to slam the ICS or the drivers because I'm sure they can handle the 3 seconds we are trying to make up but I just don't understand how they can continue this lack of pace after this season while trying to grow the series. I figured much of it was the actual car and not the power plant but PT mentioned on Twitter this week about that not being the case. I am not happy with one engine and one car but I understand the reasons why it is that way for the time being. Moreover, I am not happy that the cars aren’t as fast as the cars CCWS was running 2 years ago can't understand why that wasn't addressed this season. Car or power plant, I don't care, I just want to get rid of those 3 unnecessary seconds.

uhhh... doesn't RELIABLE count for anything??? That's the most important function it serves for the IRL, who doesn't have money to replace blown motors weekly...I'm sure if Honda were allowed unlimited development, your opinion may be different...
but, hate all you want... it shortens lives...

i agree with that. i mean when was the last time that ANY car was forced to the sidelines for an actual engine failure? justin wilson 2008 long beach? that was a cosworth. 2003 buddy lazier, 2003 sam hornish, kanaan, wheldon etc. there were a rash of these with a.g.r. because they had the new gen honda and were apparently chewing up internals. needless to say, the hondas, even detuned, just live.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall this is a badged Illmor that Honda has massaged over time...not something they designed and created.
