hey guys. i thought i'd post some pics of the deformable structure that helped tk survive the accident at indy. keep in mind that ALL of this damage was incurred on the first hit and it happened at speed. if you look closely you can see the forward part of the bulkhead of the chassis is still mounted to the nosecone. contrary to published reports there was NO intrusion at the tub. there was however a complete break running the lenght of the tub behind the driver from the airbox to the floor.

That was a really scary hit and could of been much worse than some broken ribs. If I was TK I would of kissed that car back in the garage!

If I'm not mistaken -- and I don't believe that I am, what you are calling a bulkhead in the nose cone is an integral part of the structure of the nose of the aircraft. There is an additional similar bulkhead on the chassis. They are structural, they do stiffen (and thereby protect) the particular parts of the car.
no i don't believe your mistaken. it just depends on how you look at it. the forward most part of the tub is called a bulkhead, simply because it terminates. it is called a chassis wall, bulkhead, stiff panel etc etc. i don't think either of us are wrong.
