SPEED’s Sound & Picture Quality Issues (Merged)

Doubt this is very helpful but my cable feed (COX San Diego) broadcasts SPEED on a digital channel in 480i, and on an HD channel in 720p. On a regular old, 4:3, TV the digital channel feed chops off the graphics as indicated in this thread - while the HD channel (showing on the old 4:3 TV) shows everything. I have tried every adjustment possible while watching the digital (non-HD) channel and no improvement.

If it were a problem with speed, everyone would have the same problem, wouldn't they? I have absolutely no issues with the broadcast viewing it on their HD channel. I haven't checked the broadcast on the non-HD channel so I don't know how that displays.

I've watched all the races via DirecTV Speed HD and all the races have seemed fine to me. I've been able to see all lap counters and clocks on the screen.

Why we do not yet have a true HD 1080 feed is beyond me.....

Why people don't understand that HD is pretty much an American only concept as of now, and the F1 is a World thing is beyond me.

Do some searching around the forums and you'll find out why you don't have a true HD 1080 feed for F1, and you'll find it about 500 times just for this season alone.

It's the same exact coverage, it's just different announcers.

Plus if you want to watch it on BBC then turn on the BBC channel and watch it.

I have a 40 inch Samsung LCD HDVT 1080i. I have Comcast and HDTV.

These are my pictures on the SPEED SD channel:

I have an HDTV and lucky enough to have SPEED HD in my area (it wasn't available in all areas). Now it's worse than just the default channel to begin with either way!

Because we're trying to turn on new American viewers. Right?

HD is not an "American"concept, just America finally catching up to the Japanese standard from 1981! Europe, Japan has HD as does Australia and most of the rest of the planet. Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motor racing and we should be able to watch it in HD. Hopefully Bernie wakes up and changes the feed for the 2010 season to full HD.

I am not sure why some of us are having issues with the Speed HD feed this season as last year my Direct TV feed was fine? This season I cannot see the top of the screen which cuts off the laps, time remaining and P1 position?

Just tried changing my tv settings from 480i-1080i and still the top of the feed is cut off. Perhaps this is a Direct TV issue, and not a Speed problem?

The thing I think most people are upset with is the notion that, "SPEED's problem" or not, it appears that SPEED could fix the problem by showing the races in 16:9 format rather than in 4:3. They're not doing that.

The only real option, at least on TV, that U.S. viewers have for viewing F1 is on SPEED. SPEED at the very least APPEARS unconcerned about the problem, as they have made no attempt to address it to their audience. This also makes it appear as if they are so unconcerned as to be unmotivated to remedy the problem, further alienating and infuriating their viewers.

Simple enough, eh?

Yeah it sounds simple, and like you said it appears they could just switch to the black-bared 16:6 feed, however Appearances are deceiving. For all we know there could be a stipulation in the TV contract that states that they are not allowed to do that with the SD feed.
