Wow this reminds me of the motor vs engine debate!

Maybe because there is no debate. Cars have engines, electrically powered devices have motors.

Cars also have wheels, which include the rim.........

What is Detroit's nickname again?

Motor City, and yes we use the term "Motorsports" too...but technically the word "motor" refers to electric motors and "engine" refers to internal combustion engines.

I don't mind motor, but "rimz yo!" really gets on my nerves. I guess its my racing roots??

Technically motor does not refer to an electric motor exclusively.

AFAIK there isn't another common name for electric motor, other than a motor.

I would like to see formal documentation supporting powerplants of the electric variety are required to be referred to as 'motors' and those of the chemical reaction type are 'engines.'

Just to add a little good humored fuel to the fire, NASA will refer to the business ends of rockets as rocket motors and rocket engines.

Calling wheels 'rims' though, may be colloquialism, and may technically right or wrong, it frankly doesn't matter... I agree is grating on the nerves.

Madhadder3:

Yes you can have powder coated rims in NASCAR.
MWR uses them and a few other people from Kentucky use them as well in cup and Nationwide. David Green is one guy. It's a kentucky thing mostly. I think started or at least made famous by DW.

In the case of Waltrip, not only the rim, but the whole wheel is powder-coated.

From Webster's - rim--1. an edge, border, or margin. 2. the outer part of a wheel.
