I can suggest an excellent book which is "Driving with the Devil" by Neal Thompson.
It is a history of the formation of early stock car racing with early pioneers like driver Red Byron and car owner Raymond Parks as well as Bill France.
What makes it different however than a lot of other NASCAR books is the thoughtful analysis of the impact of Southern culture and the moonshining industry on the formation and evolution of stock car racing without resorting to any stereotypes.
I have a few hundred racing books and this one is among the very best I have ever read. It is very captivating and nearly impossible to put down.

The best book about NASCAR is "Stroker Ace." Next is the Smokey Yunick book.
