WTG:

48 Team. Really proud of those guys - they weren't very good in practice or at the start of the race but they steadily worked on it all day and Jimmie went head-to-head with Tony Stewart who was, according to Andy Petree, in an obviously stronger car, and he held him off for nearly 15 laps. Very impressive.

44 Team: Smart pit strategy and great driving by Reut led to another good run for this crew. Who knows what he could do with consistently decent equipment.

11 Team: Third third place finish - guess you may deserve to be in the Chase afterall... wink

WTG and Oh No!:

24 Team: Had a terrific car in practice - what happened? They pulled out a top ten finish but they started off a lot better than the 48 team did so obviously the car was good at some point. How does the 48 take a much worse car and win the race while the 24 team takes a great car and hangs on to finish in the top 10? They get a WTG because it was, after all, a top ten, but it should have been better.

6 Team: No one expected this team to get this close and David was doing a good job hanging in there until he ran through whatever it was that messed up both his car and the 17.

Oh no:

84 team: If Scott gets this car will he have half the mechanical failures that AJ has had?

FIA: Yeah, I know, wrong forum, but any decision as horrible as that one deserves to be cricized whenever and where-ever possible. It is the height of hypocrisy for any F1 fan to compare NASCAR to the WWE while supporting the sanctioning body that is the FIA.

Congratulations to the Top 12 and the fans of each of those drivers - it'll be fun to watch them in the Chase. smile

Special WTG to David Ragan and the 6 team - they have come so far in a very short time.

The whole 00 team for getting the car back in the Top 35. McDowell had a really good run.

Whoever fixed the board. smile

Oh No:

Robby Gordon falling out of the Top 35 - No one is expecting wins, but 35th out of 43 shouldn't be too much to ask - if MWR can manage to get 3 cars locked in, when all started the season outside the Top 35, Robby should be able to manage 1 car. Annual manufacturer changes and monthly crew chief changes are NOT the way to go - pick one of each and stick with it.

Kasey Kahne was never a factor in the race - not what I expected based on his and his team's prior history at RIR.

Edited to say - I may have been a little quick to give a WTG to the board - it's still 7 hours fast. raspberry

in any case, it was a fantastic showing for the sport in general.. lots of twists and turns in Sunday's story. It was rather strange watching Tony give ANYBODY so much space when "racing" though.. I guess he needs Hendrick more than they need him next season. Nice of Jim to give him a nod in VL for being such a good teammate..

WTG:

- Jimmie for 2 in a row, and him & Tony for a good race at the end.

- David Reutimann for the best Cup race of his career with over 100 laps led and a 9th place finish. Sometimes I think he's successful in spite of MWR when you look at the other two teams. Now he's just 70 points out of 20th in the points.

- Hamlin and Harvick for continuing their strong run of races going into the Chase. Hamlin with three straight 3rd place finishes (6 of his 9 top fives this year have been 3rd place finishes), and Harvick for 6 straight top 10 finishes (including three 4th place finishes, 4 of his 6 top five finishes have been 4th place finishes). So Hamlin 3rd and Harvick 4th by the end of the year? lol

- Mark Martin for his first top five since the first Richmond race back in May, a span of 11 races for him. He has 9 top tens in 18 starts this year and his 13.4 average finish is 6th overall for the year and so far it's the best average finish the DEI 8 team has had since 13.5 in 2006 and 12.1 in 2004.

- All the drivers who made the Chase. Clint for managing to hold on, and even Ragan just for having a shot at it in just his 2nd year after his struggles in his rookie year.

- Yates Racing for 17th and 18th place finishes with Kvapil and Gilliland. It's Gilliland's first top 20 finish since his 2nd at Infineon back in June.

- Michael McDowell for a great top 20 finish. Hey wait a minute...

OH NOES:

- MWR for sucking so much outside of Reut that top 20 finishes are something to be happy about for McDowell or Mikey. Although Mike Skinner must have helped. But Mikey's had a much longer and more successful career in Cup than Skinner, how come his experience isn't helping? Then again Mikey's weekly seminar How to Barely Survive for Over 20 Years in Cup Averaging A Worse Finish than 20th hasn't been too successful. Even Derrike Cope gets people for his How to Start and Park seminar but he gives the people cookies and drinks. Unfortunately they only sit down for a minute to eat and drink it and then they leave, which goes to show that the seminar did them a world of good.

- Jeff Burton, even with a 6th place finish they're backing into the Chase right now and haven't had a top 5 finish since Pocono back on June 8th. Running 15th every race isn't going to cut it and if they have bad luck then they could end up the bottom of the barrel team.

- AJ Allmendinger, because Jesus doesn't want you in the top 35 because for the 2nd straight time that AJ's gotten himself into the top 35 he's had unfortunate problems in the next race and he's lucky that he didn't drop out this time.

- Robby Gordon, for actually dropping out. His qualifying has been terrible this year, averaging 30th. 4 straight finishes of 37th or worse have him in really bad position now.

It was a great race. Lots of different legitimate leaders, good passing - racing the way it ought to be.

As for Tony, you hear it all the time. He raced Jimmie the way that Jimmie has raced him: "We did everything we could -- we raced him clean, we raced him the way he would have raced us. I wanted to race him with respect -- the way he would me -- and we just came up short."

Why oh why would you credit NA$CAR for making the changes? The only thing they did was change the starting time. It was the track workers and the race teams that had to improvise.
Jeez oh Pete I hope that the NFL pummled NA$CAR in the t v ratings.
(I can't stand NA$CAR the organization but the fans and teams are cool. Except Michael Waltrip, Jimmy Spencer, Kenny Wallace, and Hendrick Motorsports.)

how did the teams have to improvise? all these teams always do all their practice for night races during the day.. the track workers? not even sure what you think their challenge was. My nod to the teams was merely in the fact that they were on top of tightening the cars enough to stay fast. My nod to NASCAR is in that they decided to not chance having a show screwed up by weather, made sure the fans got all that they paid for and managed to run both races successfully without compromising much at all.

J., I know that drivers will "race him how he races me", but it just seemed like Tony was giving a WHOLE LOT more space than was truly necessary for clean racing.. it was more like cautious driving. Maybe he wasn't fast enough to put the screws to Jimmie.. I wasn't in the car so I can't say.. but there were many times when Tony had 3/4 of a car on Jimmie and yet he confined himself feet away from the 48, getting out of the gas so that he wouldn't push up the track and come close.

it just seemed a little "too nice"..
