Or was it 2 to go?

At any rate, according to Varsha, he had moved up to 3rd. Why did he pit in and give up a podium finish? Was the position untenable in the rain?

It was a gamble, knowing that the leaders would not pit for inters the drivers farther back gambled some precious time and track position to get it all back and more while the leaders toddled around to the finish line. It worked for Heidfeld, and it might have worked for Alonso .

Both Alonso & Heidfeld pitted to switch t Intermediate Tyres.

The switch allowed Heidfeld to drive from about 9th to 2nd & was lapping some 30+ seconds faster than those on dry tyres over the final laps.

So did NH pit before Fred?

I think Heidfeld pited with 2 laps to go while Alonso pitted on the final lap.

Shades of Germany last year? Had it rained harder, rain tires would have looked to be the right choice. IMHO, Alonso's car didn't look that planted, he struggled to make that car fast and when it got wet, maybe it got too much to bare. Though up until Kimi crashed Alonso was fourth not third, Massa was in third.

Here's the last 4 laps of the race. Heidfeld was in 6th before he pitted and even with the time for the pit stop he still managed to carve about 30 seconds off of Hamilton's gap over him.

Alonso pitted a lap later than Heidfeld and he managed to carve 17 seconds off his deficit to the lead. Had he pitted a lap early he likely would have had a win - even without Hamilton's penalty.

With the evidence of Heidfeld's pace had Ferrari brought in either Raikkonen or Massa, or had Mclaren brought in Hamilton in on the same lap as Alonso they could have had an easy (controversy free) victory.

A twist on an old saying, "To finish on the first (lowest) step on the podium, first you must finish." It is possible Alonso felt just completing a lap was untenable.

Bourdais (ahead of Alonso) didn't pit, and we all saw where that got him...
