McLaren’s Martin Whitmarsh admits that it’s not entirely clear what will happen with the team’s attempt to appeal Lewis Hamilton’s Spa penalty.

Hamilton clearly CHEATED and cut the course and then used it to his advantage to pass Kimi.

If you are slower you have no advantage to LOSE! Hamilton REPASSED Kimi.

If it is in lieu of a drive through, I hope the court dismisses the appeal as, it is clear one cannot lodge an appeal during the race. Whether the stewards are right or not, is not the question.

To those who think Lewis cheated, what did you want him to do? He could have held his line and let Kimi take them both out, which most likely would have led to his being fined for the next race. In rejoining, how slow should he have gone?

Hamilton backed off after he by-passed the chicane, but he clearly did not give up the position. I kept waiting for one of the broadcast crew to say something about it.

Lewis has taken Kimi out of two races now. The penalty is mild! And they said Michael was "aggressive! THis is twice this season that Lewis has cheated.

What difference did it make to the race as Kimi spun out of the lead a few corners later and then threw it off the road, none of this had anything to do with Lewis. What about Massa in Valencia how come no penalty!!!

Hey markwemple and blauer, can you explain to me how Lewis took Kimi out in this race? Kimi lost it on his own. Not only did he crash all by himself, after the Rosberg incident he spun on his own, and he hit Lewis in La Source-this from a Kimi fan.LHwon

Oh and markwemple, about Valencia: you're right, it was the mechanics fault, but still a Ferrari violation. True Massa backed down, but in this case LH let off and let Kimi past.

Frankly, I do not see why there is so much confusion here. If Hamilton did not cut across the chicane, that is if he had to brake, slow down, and pull back in behind Kimi's car (like in any other corner where you can't cut across after you have a failed pass attempt) then he would have never been in a position to pass at the end of the straight. He would have lost too much time for that manuver on that lap. So Hamilton did, in fact, gain by cutting across the chicane: that is what is expressly against the rules. One cannot have a gain from cutting the chicane. It is an option so you don't crash (or cause others to crash), not to have any gain of any sort. By the way, I have been watching F1 for over 30 yrs and that was the first thing I thought when watching this race. I wondered why the commentators didn't bring this up at the time. I clearly thought Hamilton had gained and never really backed off enough to make it clear he was conceding the gain for that corner.
