To be objective, I must give Roth credit. He was fast today and qualified ahead of several high profile drivers including Ryan Hunter-Reay, Hideki Mutoh, Oriol Servia and Ed Carpenter among others.

He hasn't been that bad on the ovals lately.

Funny thing is that Mad Dog Marty has qualified well this year on the 1.5 ovals(8th at HOmestead, 7th at Kansas & 11th at Kentucky) but didn't finish in the top twenty in any of those races. So I wouldnt expect anything different from good ole Marty in this race either.

It didn't take long for Roth to go from P9 to 926...Roth is a joke as a driver and he has no business been out there....I hope the Indy Car Series shows him the door after this season.

In order to have consistent speed throughout the duration of a stint you need chassis development. Marty Roth competes as a singleton effort and has .50 to .25 as much data acquisition as some of the bigger teams on the grid; chassis development is probably virtually non-existent. Given the qualifying format for ovals this year, his results are not by luck. I think it is sad that people are so frustrated with their own inadequacies that they feel the need to pile-on to other people. Roth's efforts are admirable (in my opinion); anyone who has turned a wheel has to give credit to the guy for going out there and racing for the love of the sport. I would love to see the look on people's faces if they guy wins on an oval before all is said and done.

You know, Danica Patrick has qualified well and then faded to the rear of the grid early in the race for much of her career (she continues to do so and has one of the best cars in the series), yet no one crucifies her for this.

Qualifying is one thing, the race is another and of the four previous times he's started 15th or better this year, only once did he not finish worse than 20th and that was at Richmond, where he finished 19th after 117 laps due to handling issues.
