I just had to share this: Watching TV last night and watch one of our local Ford dealership adverting. It basically says this:

"Considering a car instead of a truck to save on gas?"

They show a '09 Honda Accord EX V6 starts at $25,960 while an '08 Ford F-150 XLT Supercrew is $19,999, for a savings of $5,961.

"Why wait 8 years to save the money you could save today? The truth is, you would have to drive the Accord more than 8 years to get your money back on fuel savings alone."

Challenge: How many holes can we put into the advertising?

A local Ford dealer has been running a similar ad on the radio comparing the F150 to a Prius. I also laughed. I wonder if the idea is from Ford?

There's some value in what they are saying...particularly if you are able to invest the $$ at a nominal rate of return above inflation wink

What becomes more interesting, when talking about hybrids, is taking the initial premium, relative to the gas powered equivalent, out over the same 8 year period...at an average of 20,000 miles a year the car may be approaching the point where it needs a new battery pack...or may not, the jury's still out on that one...which will add another $3500 or so to the total cost...personally, I'd rather buy the gas equivalent (say a Civic instead of a Civic hybrid). The only way to justify buying the hybrid is to minimize your consumption of oil...which is great if you're green...but, are you helping the environment, if you have green considerations? I've read, once you factor in battery disposal and recycling, that the Prius leaves a bigger carbon footprint than a typical SUV, even given the appetite for fuel of the "normal" vehicle...

Until fuel cell tech comes on line, the whole hybrid thing is just a marketing tool, imho. If you want to save oil and be green, get a little turbo diesel car.

^^ I do kind of wonder if it did come from Ford?

^ You're right about the hybrid. But my Ford dealership didn't use the hybrid, they are talking about the regular Accord V6 EX model. Which if you're buying a car for gas mileage, wouldn't you be buying the next model DOWN (LX) with the 4 banger (starting price at $20,755 manual or $21,555 auto). Or if it's really about the gas mileage, would you pick the Civic over the Accord? Plus, after 8 years which one is going to be worth more, Honda or F-150?

Yeah, the depreciation is going to be greater on the truck.

If you use 2007 data and look at:

http://www.internetautoguide.com/cost-of-ownership/09-int/2007/ford/f-150/index.html

and

http://www.internetautoguide.com/cost-of-ownership/09-int/2007/honda/accord/index.html

The F-150 will cost $35,232 to operate for 5 years and the 5 year cost of the Accord $26,505. And you are still three years short of the 8 year break even point on the difference in vehicle prices. Extrapolating the F-150 $7,000/year operating cost out to eight years put the operating cost of the truck at apprx $56,000, while the Accord at 8 years of ownership would cost a little north of $42,000.

So even if you did save six grand at time of initial purchase of the truck vs. car, at the break even point of 8 years as described in the advertising you have now spent apprx $14,000 more owning the F-150 instead of the Accord.

But then again, I could be wrong... wink

Of course, you guys are right...the truck gets killed on resale, which throws the whole equation out of whack...I kinda forgot that part! red face

The other point about "selective comparison" (i.e. 6 cylinder, rather than 4 cylinder Accord) also makes sense...that's kind of what I was trying to get at, by giving a more "apples to apples" kind of comparison with the Civics...hybrid vs. gas only...ok, I'll admit, I was just looking for a chance to bash this hyped hybrid mania going on in consumerland LOL

Gee, wonder why they didn't make the comparison to a $25K Ford Fusion?

Because they want people to buy a truck.

One point should be point out is the price of the F-150. They are pricing the F-150 XLT Supercrew for $19,999, that's like $28-30k truck a year ago.

What's really weird is driving past the Chrysler place and seeing giant HALF OFF! signs on brand new Ram trucks...
