I've noticed that some Cup cars, specifically Carl Edwards' and Tony Stewart's cars, display numbering on the bottom of their quarter panels. These cars have been festooned with these numbers for years, however I've always been puzzled by existence. What do the numbers represent and why are they there? Do they denote the chassis number?

Those are store numbers. Their respective sponsors have taken to honoring their assorted stores by putting the numbers on the cars. If you look, those numbers will change every race. so, for example, if the company I worked for were to do a similar sponsor deal, we would be shown as store #2362/6835 (main store/auto dept, which is where I work).

I always though that the numbers were just for stores close to the week's event, but if you look up the 2 stores on Tony's car, they're for one in Vermont (#4502) and Wisconsin (#4930).

I think that's how it started, with the local stores number on the car and some of the employees attending the race.
