101 Cars You Should Drive could be so much more!

I love cars and all of the positives and negatives that go along with each model. As much as I want to like 101
Cars You Must Drive, I just can't get past the non stop yammering the host does. It would not be so bad if we were getting details on features and "firsts" that the vehicle introduced to the market but we don't. The host blathers on about picking up girls etc. and misses passing on some truly interesting info about the car. In a day when there is a big shortage in programs geared toward those of us interested in the auto industry, "101 Cars " disappoints. Right now Top Gear on BBC America gives me more info and is truly entertaining in the process. Yeah, it is a little goofy but they do get the true driving impression conveyed even when driving older cars that "101 Cars" would be looking at. Please stick to the facts and leave the non vehicle yakking out of the script.

It could be a lot more. It could be "Victory by Design". Acutal interesting cars with host Alain Decadenet, who knows EVERYTHING about pretty much every cool car ever made...plus he can drive.

Produce new "Victory by Design" series. Ditch "101".

i caught the show "voyages" this a.m. on the history channel.
it was about the original datsun z car.

that's what that show should be modeled after.

i think it totally escapes them how to create anything that's geared towards rational adults.
it's all about attracting the yahoo crowd and their "here today-gone tomorrow" attention span.

they record the ratings during the short time they're focused on the new shows and their hype.
that way they can tout the massive viewer base.
but even that crowd must tire quickly after the thousanth time the see dirty oil dumped on the heads of the idiots in the commercials.

I have no idea as to who Bodden (sp?) is or what he does (athlete?), but he is a poor choice to host that show. No cred. Borderline reality jive.

The show could be quite interesting if as suggested here it had a host such as DeCadenet or someone who seems to know anything about cars.

The Victory By Design shows were superb entertainment.

Well, who could believe that I would posting in support of Speed?! :-0

To be fair to Speed, not everyone who tunes into or accidentally surfs into Speed is a bona fide car fan. My pulse starts pounding when I smell rubber smoke, even if it's from the fan belt of the Lada in front of me. Victory By Design is a great show but de Cadenet can make me grind my teeth cometimes and not everyone is interested in learning that the Ferrari Testa Rossas were originally named because . . . the engine's valve-covers were painted in a crackle-red finish.

I have my problems with 101 -- the Porsche Speedster was a stock 356 roadster, and no one EVER needed to drive a K-car (assuming that Chrysler's mini-vans could actually be considered K-cars) -- but it's a pleasant show that introduces people to a vast array of car types and makes. The host -- who is supposed to be a well-known comic(?) -- is witty enough to give me a couple of smiles each show, and he seems to enjoy what he's doing and appreciate his good fortune. He was hilarious trying to pass a bicyclist going uphill in a Fiat 500 with his head up through the sunroof. But getting to drive a functional Chrysler Turbine, let alone a blower Bentley, is unique, and we get to hear what a normal (i.e. no racing license or test-driver certificate) car guy thinks of these cars, the boring and the unique.

Rallying for more Victory By Design episodes should have it's own string. They fly around the world to find key perfect and provenanced examples of each marque, then they convince someone to let them drive them, and they fly the host in to tape each car on a great road with beautiful surroundings. It ain't cheap. Maybe it would be more cost-effective if Speed could find a sponsor that would help underwrite the costs for some prominent logo placement, but each episode is a major investment. And let's not forget the weather: You can't shoot expensive, museum-quality cars in the open in the middle of a snow storm or hurricane. (And unlike some at the Goodwood vintage races, I do NOT like seeing rare, beautiful, and storied antiques balled up into scrap by some used-to-be or never-was who thinks he's in first place on the last lap at LeMans . . . Mr de Cadenet?)

I only watched the show once and the host was not very funny at all for someone that claims to be a comic.
The choice of cars is pretty silly too.

Alonzo Bodden isn't as bad as you all make him out to be. He tends to draw a chuckle in just about every car he drives. Him in a Fiat 500 was some of his best work to date. Sure we all would love to completely recreate Top Gear with its original cast... fat chance in the States. Or get Leno to do it, fine, you pay him his salary and I am sure Speed will rush to it.

And remember Speed isn't just for the hardcore car guy anymore, and thsi show isn't either. My wife watches 101 and enjoys it, heck her mom even laughed at it when she was here, and try to get either one to sit through an hour of DeCadenet driving some Eurorelic that no one outside of the SPEED Name that Car thread posters has ever heard of before.

I agree with what the majority here is saying. Alonzo may be a talented comedian but he is lost on this show. You also have to blame the producers for making him repeat "so this is why this car is one of 101 cars you must drive" every 10 seconds. The shows cheesy graphics don't help much either. Alonzo may not be so much of a wrong choice as it is nice to have a regular guy's perspective, so I blame it on the producers. That being said Alonzo should bone up a little on his knowledge.
