so my teammate tells me the other day that one of his old teammates from around 10 years ago wants to come out from Cali and run the 6 hr endurance at TWS with us on our bike. Our "big bike" at the moment is a bandit 400 that took a hit to the cases in t11 at TWS 3 years ago that opened it up, bent the subframe and bars and it's sat in the garage since. SO, we thought about it, figured it would be fun and told him sure, we'd get it running for the event and he could come ride with us. his response "i don't want to ride some clapped out, underpowered, POS, i think i'll just go to sears point".
since you're a yankee and don't get out much, joe, i'll explain. you've at least heard the expression "you don't look a gift horse in the mouth", i hope? well, what that means, to people with any sense of history and knowledge of expression, is that it is impolite to inspect the teeth of a gifted horse as inspecting a horses teeth is how they are checked for age. in other words, don't complain about free stuff. just say "thank you"
we decided we'd try to get it running and ride w/o him. we'll get blown by on the straights by most everyone but we should be able to keep up in the corners... mostly
I wish I lived down there, Zoot. I'd love to ride an underpowered, clapped out POS for free. One of the most fun, and most annoying races I ever rode was on a borrowed FZ 600. It was crashed and crushed (tank held about 2.5 gallons) and tired, but it was light, it handled, and stopped really well. After blowing through 2/3rds of the pack from a last place start (reg. just before it shut down) I got behind an F2 and altough I passed him, sometimes more than once a lap, he kept getting by on the streight. He nipped me at the line and dropped me to 8th place. Frustrating but fun. Yeah, I'd take you up on that...and love it. Some people just don't appreciate a good thing.
The only 400 4 I've ridden was an FZR400, and I'd love to spend a day losing on that thing. I'm no racer but that would be enough to get me to buy leathers! (if I could get my knees to bend far enough to ride one those these days)
