As an appendectomy recipient myself, I can vouch for an attack being very sudden. He might have been feeling fine that day, if maybe a little tummy ache.

If they were able to do the 3 small incisions and suck the thing out (I hope my technical terms aren't over everyone's head 
) I think he should be fine, if they had to make a large incision it will be close.
I'm not a doctor (which is pretty obvious), but I am appendix-less (large incision version).
