I know that they work goofy, is it just the how small they are or is there something else that is weird with them?

Multi disk, smaller in size and thicker in a late model...in my dirt days we only ran 3rd & 4th ie: SHEET AND GET , if you get my drift 
in the transmission's along with the required reverse gears....less weight...not sure about MOD's...probabally the same for a dirt MOD though...
