Major McLaren sponsor Santander, a Spanish bank, is to switch allegiances to Ferrari for 2009 and beyond, according to reports.

German magazine Sport Bild claims that the deal is worth up to 25 million Euros per season, and could involve the driving services of former champion Fernando Alonso...

I mentioned to a professor at the college across the street from my office how frustrated I was with the almost useless and annoying site right after the “redesign” back in March or April. I ran into him the other day and he said his class is watching the site as a class project. He said besides the entertainment they get, it offers real lessons in what happens when a technology project goes off the rails.

Maybe, but it is plausible and makes sense for Ferrari.

The reason Santander signed on with McLaren was because of Alonso last year and with the rather messy divorce between Fernando and McLaren, and with McLaren having no Spanish drivers it is not surprising that Santander is switching allegiances. Where it gets interesting is that they are going to Ferrari, which may signal that Alonso already has a contract with the Prancing Horse starting in 2010.

Seems like a sign of things to come. I hope Kimi stays on for 2 more years, but I won't hold my breath. Imagine Nando and Kimi.

It would be highly competitive and very similar to Prost/Senna at McLaren. But I wouldn't expect see rift like we saw at McLaren last year between Hamilton and Alonso.

Kimi said it would be "interesting" to race against Fernando in the same car. A typical understatement by Kimi. While I'd be happy for Alonso if this happened, I'd rather see the driving talent more spread out. Alonso at BMW for instance.

Yeah I don't think Kimi would disobey team orders setting off a firestorm within the team as Hamilton did. Ferrari would manage it better.

Santander owns Abbey in the UK which was one of their strongest perfoming companys. That is one of the reasons they stayed with McLaren instead of bolting like other spanish sponsors.

Another possiblity .., there were rumors that Santander (along will Muthua) were going to split Mclaren and go with Renault. One rumored reason Heikki was let go by Renault in favor of Piquet was that the Spainish sponsors wanted "Latin" drivers.." (enter Piquet JR.)

Ferrari fills this requirement with at least one driver.. Massa. But, I will admit this announcement (if true) does have something of an Alonso feeling to it.

Which team is going to choose Kubica in the next season? There is more and more signs which indicate that it is going to be Ferrari. Italian went ape over the Pole and they want to pay the BMW Sauber team even 50 million Euro for the transfer.

According to German "Sport Bild" money on purchase of Kubica is to give the main sponsor of Ferrari - Marlboro. The Pole would have to advertise their cigarettes on the market of Eastern Europe. The tabacco company estaimates that in this way money given on Kubica would pay back.

According to the daily "Sport Bild" the Pole in Ferrari team would replace Kimi Raikkonen.

...so it's Alonso and Kubica for next season at Ferrari.
I can't say I'd hate it.

If you repeatedly fling poo against the wall, some of it will actually stick. I wouldn't give them too much credit for their "journalism" model. wink

As much as I love Kimi in the Ferrari, and have a soft spot for Massa, I feel the same way. Being that my allegiance lies with Ferrari first and drivers second, I'd have to agree that Kubica and Alonso wouldn't be all that bad to have in the drivers seats.
