What’s going on with Jr.?

I've noticed lately he seems very distracted and distant in his interviews... He answers all the questions eventually, but he seems to have a hard time stringing enough words together to make a complete sentence... And last night he didn't even know who he was racing for the lead...

I also noticed when Brad K. is asked what it's like having Jr. for a boss he usually gives a Rah! Rah! Jr.'s the best! kind of answer, but last night on Countdown he was pretty somber and said that there are "highlights and lowlights" to having Jr. as a boss...

So whats going on with Jr. lately? I thought his move to HMS was to relieve all the stress he had... Then his race win supposedly relieved the stress he had built up this year... Now it seems like it's building again... So what's the deal?

He is trying to not upset NASCAR and say what he is really feeling. Last night had to be killer for him, he knows that his car was just SLOW compared to those two Toyotas, and he could do nothing about it. That is incredibly frustrating for a driver, to know that you have the skill, but not the equipment.

That had to be frustrating for the other drivers when he went on his restrictor plate rampage shortly after his father passed away.

It goes in cycles.

Toyota invested a lot of money to be in the sport, you didn't think they were gonna just " be involved " did you?

There are 42 other drivers on the track. In the Nationwide series, where quite a few cars have rotating drivers, it is not at all surprising that someone would be unaware of who was in any given car on any particular night. The 20 car has had four drivers this season (Stewart, Hamlin, Ky Busch, and Lagano).

Over the radio, the teams refer to other cars by numbers, not drivers, so there really was no reason for Jr to have known who was in the car.

He'll ALWAYS have pressure on him, no matter where he races or for who. It's the nature of the beast with him. He'll never get away from it and he knows it.

And, if there were anything "wrong" with him, maybe it's people who question stuff all the time and look for all these signs of something "wrong" or pick apart every look and everything he says.

He's fine, as far as I can see. He's a normal human being who has highs, lows and average days. If someone followed you around with a camera 24/7 and asked you to comment all the time, I'm sure you'd display many different types of emotions. JMO

This was not in the post race interview, but, it was some other interview. It might have been in prerace or during qualifying for the Sprint Cup race. But, anyway, he did seem to speak haultingly. It was not a steady flow of words in a sentence.

It never has been. He's not a very good public speaker and is not comfortable speaking to the media. It's one of the reason's I like the guy. wink

I am glad I'm not the only one seeing the difference. I've been watching Jr since he has moved over to HMS, he just doesn't look happy, content or secure with himself. I miss the "fun" Jr, we hardly ever see him smile anymore. Maybe it is because he has matured. I don't know, but there is something missing.

+1

Add to that the fact that he will always stand in his fathers shadow (to some) and it's understandable how he comes across. He isn't a Movie star, he isn't an English major from an ivy league college. He's a guy that grew up in the rural south with a father that wasn't around until he was a teenager. Go have a conversation with the 25 year old that works in the car dealership doing brake jobs, and see if you can tell a big difference. Most of his fans like him BECAUSE of who he is, try cutting him some slack, because he didn't request his status in life, it was thrust upon him and he's doing the best he can. AA JMHO

Look at it this way. Last year he made the biggest decision of his professional life. Now it's time to see if it was a good one. Add that to running two car's as an owner and the normal demands on him based on who he is, that seems like a lot of pressure to me.
