il, i was thinking the same thing of spies at laguna. i think folks should stop all the hyperbolic predictions and let the results speak for themselves the way that jt did the first couple rounds this year.

Thomson: Ben's lap times at the end of Donington were good enough for 7th fastest on a track he barely knew and foreign bike/tires. He know's Laguna. He now knows how the bike/tires feel and will get more time I believe testing at Assen after the race and the Indy test. Last year he put times up on the board on his Superbike that would have been fourth overall on the GP grid. Ben has said the bike is easier to ride than his Superbike, so we'll see with more time what he can do. Obviously, there's going to be guys that are tough and all but I think he's really going to shine. Anyone that can't see how talented & hungry Spies is, is blind.
Bell: I believe you're correct with James. Track knowledge will help a lot those weekends. I hope he can turn around and get a better result. It's got to suck not being able to throw a good showing at your home grand prix.

You did see where I said I thought he would be a GP winner right?

I know how this will sound, but since the start of the season, I have been thinking that JT's best chances of a podium are at Assen and Laguna.
Yeah right, you say that the day after he crashes out of his home GP.

Nice but of ########## there. I always had you down as a reasonable fella, perhaps I misjudged. Either you believe me or you are calling me liar. Which is it?
JT along with Philip Island, knows Assen and Laguna as well as any track on the calendar and goes well at all three.

Just a little nudge. A joke. Didn't mean anything by it. I just thought it was kind of funny you picked two tracks after his home race which theoretically he should have a bit of an advantage at.

JT and Spies only have chances at a podium on Playstation. Or if there is a race like Assen '06 where you have guys like Nicky and Colin fighting for a win while the rest of the field is out sick.
Bell, you have to come to grips with the fact that Toseland is painfully average. Melandri but the old Tech 3 Yam (the nighmare) on the podium at the old Assen. JT couldn't manage that trick.
As for the Spies people talking all tough after qualifying... looks like the cream rose to the top and Ben sank to the bottom. Say what you want about playing it safe, but the only guy he straight up beat was Melandri. And we know how well Melandri is riding/feeling right now.
As I said in the othet thread, he managed to do what Okada did a Mugello. And Okada was riding on a completely unknown bike, and trying not to crash. So I ask you, is Okada a hot prospect? Is he asking for big money (and yeah, if Melandri got 2.5 million Euro for his Ducati deal, AFTER winning more races than Hayden on a satelite Honda... Spies is asking for big money).
Oh, and you are also comparing him to the Mole, who has be consistently slower than Capirossi all year.

To be fair, most qualifying was in the wet. The race was the first time he was in the dry. He improved consistantly. The same can certainly not be said for Melandri.
