Sound Question

There is a discussion about the Turbine car in the IRL forum. I want to ask you a question. Would you go to auto races, NASCAR, IndyCar, sports car races, your local short track, if they were required to have mufflers and made the cars as quiet as the safety vehicles on the track?

rolleyes

Why do you harp on this sound thing? The thread is titled "I Miss The Way Indy Used To Be…"

I was ready to defend when somebody stuffed mufflers into the equation out of the clear blue and now you're usin 'em to load the question. There was only one stinkin' turbine at only Indy in '67; and only three at Indy in '68...part of the rest of the season there was one...a coupla' races two.

The point that the turbines were used to make was only as an example of the innovation that existed back then. Not the turbine powerplants themselves, the innovation in general (that we no longer can enjoy) Sheeessshhh...

If the choice is between quiet race cars and no race cars I'll take quiet every day.

Do I consult with you on all my future threads and posts? Seems to me, that would limit my activities at SpeedForum.

Mazda used to be required to run a muffler on the rotary engined cars in the old IMSA CAmel GT series, but they were obnoxiously loud and painful without them. Also a turbocharger has a muffling effect along with producing that great exhaust note. But mufflers on stock blocks? I don't think so. Turbine cars were fast at Indy but as exciting as watching the jets take off at O'Hare

The RS series? Muffled? I don' recollect that... A certain time, mayhaps? I climbed under a Gremlin (dang if I can remember who's...Waugh's? No, he ran a Hornet, right?) and saw no muffler and I don't remember any of 'em soundin' muffled... 'Tis 30 years ago tho...

edit: Aaahhh...is you talkin just the RX3s? I didn't poke around them.

Devil's advocate again...

"Turbine cars were fast at Indy but as exciting as watching the jets take off at O'Hare"

So then...just beacause the one '67 Wallis built turbine was quieter than the 32 other Fords and Offys, it wasn't exciting watching Parnelli carving through the field...passing high, low, on the short chutes?
I go to races to watch fast cars and drivers...some time I will, however, try sitting outside the circuit (heck, free to boot!) and get my fill of excitement listening....

Here is what I am getting at. At the end of the video, it shows the turbine on the track by itself. But, the sounds are also from other cars not in the picture. Then, it shows the turbine coming thru the pits. That, is as loud as it gets. Even at racing speeds, the engine sounded that loud. Oh, the reason I know this is because I saw it race at Indy. Then again at The Milwaukee Mile, where it qualified and ran the race. Do you think you would enjoy 33 of these on the track?
