BOOM: Mladin Unloads On DMG & '09 Series
by dean adams
Saturday, May 17, 2008
Six-time Superbike champion Mat Mladin has been simmering about the Daytona Motorsports Group take-over of the series for some time and today, on the podium at Infineon, Mladin anger boiled over.
From the podium, Mladin said into the track PA system that the fans of the series should "speak up now" so they won't have to see a series populated by "piece of crap motorcycles and second-rate riders".
Mladin said he had listened to hours of "propaganda" about the new series at the track and he was tired of it. "Speak up now," he implored, "so you'll be able to see top riders on the best bikes."
"Hopefully we'll be back next year," Mladin said.

More from Matt
Q Mat, you were able to hold on to a bunch of points, still. Tell us about the race.
A Today and yesterday I've heard that much stuff over the microphone out there of the propaganda these people are trying to fill all of the fans with. It's almost made me throw up. I've got a couple things to say about it. Oh, by the way, the race was okay. We got second. [Laughter]
"I just hope that the manufacturers stick together on this and allow the American racing fans to continue to see the best races on the best motorbikes in this country racing, and not some of the stuff that's been put forward." -- Mat Mladin
I'm not sure - everyone's had to listen to it, and if anybody that cares is down in the pits, they'd hear all the teams saying that they can't believe what they're hearing out there from - BMWs are going to be in the class, and Brian Parriott is such a nice guy - I've heard it about 15 times. And Brian is a nice guy, I know Brian and I think he's a great guy. But the stuff that's been going on this weekend at the racetrack is sad for motorcycle racing. I'm not sure if they're handing out pills at the gate to try and numb the fans up, but these motorcycle fans are a lot smarter than obviously what the new promoters think. They know what they're watching out there. They know that the best riders are on the racetrack, and they know that the manufacturers are putting the best motorcycles on the racetrack out there. I think everybody in Superbike would agree that what goes around comes around, and that nothing's forever. And when you stick to something long enough, you're going to succeed. That goes for every manufacturer in the class. I think everybody's forgetting that Suzuki hasn't dominated the class forever, and realistically, for the last two to three years, really, has been the only time that Suzuki has dominated Superbike racing in this country. I won my first championship winning one race in 1999. My second championship, winning four races, and I think my third championship winning maybe four races also. If that's called domination, then I'm not sure. I do recall, however, Ducati and Honda winning a lot more races than that.
I've had to listen to - and everybody's had to listen to, World Superbike - apparently World Superbike's competitive because there's controlled tires and all the bikes are the same. Well, our bikes here in the States are all not that far off World Superbike, and everybody in America that matters is on exactly the same race tires. So realistically, we're on controlled tires, and realistically, we're all on the same motorbike, even though they're different manufacturers. So as I said before, you stick to something long enough, you will succeed. It's only a matter of time, and nothing's forever, and anybody that doesn't believe that is obviously came down in the last shower.
I just hope that the manufacturers stick together on this and allow the American racing fans to continue to see the best races on the best motorbikes in this country racing, and not some of the stuff that's been put forward.
But yeah. The race was fine. Thanks.
Q Thanks for your thoughts, Mat. Can we get back to the race? Please tell us about the race a little bit.
A The race was great. Thanks.
And the quote of the week is
Q Mat, if some of the proposed changes are kept for next year, do you see yourself riding a Daytona Superbike? How do you see your future for next year if things stay the same as they are?
MLADIN: I won't be riding Daytona Superbike next year.

Good on ya, Mat!
It is about time some top rider other than Josh Hayes has come out about what a frackin' mess DMG is making of the sport.

And the sad part is,that may be exactly what DMG is looking for.Everybody leaves, factory riders, and the factories. The next thing you know there are beer swilling pigs in a Harley Dresser Race Class. It would bring them in by the millions and DMG could call it a success.Dont laugh, there ia already a drag racing association called AHDRA, All Harley Drag Racing Association. It was formed by disgruntled Harley racers who were tired of having there heads handed to them by the Jap bikes so they took their ball and went home. The NHRA has basically done the same thing with the skewed rules that allow the twins to dominate.

Have you guys forgotten the days of "twins" racing in AMA? It brought the crowds in. Scott Zampach is an American Hero. The folks in Loudon burned every Jap bike they could lay their hands on. etc. etc. etc. days of old. Point is the fan base is there. When AMA got rid of Twins and two-strokes they just about offended everybody. So maybe bring back twins but how about adding too the program not deleting what few things the existing crowd likes. But then... my vote doesn't count.
Hey if this is for real... Tommy Hayden could become the King of AMA! LOL. Or Jamie Hacking!

If DMG does what they say, I've will not see another US-based series motorcycle roadrace in-person...ever.
Long live World Superbike and MotoGP.

Drag racing is right up the Harley alley but they don't care about roadracing, never did. Loudon was just a party for them.

Funny, Mat's tune changed a bit.
May 8th Interview..
Q: What impressions can you give us about your chats with the new DMG group, which recently purchased the AMA? Do you have any thoughts on that?
MLADIN: I really don't. I've really made no comments about it. Do I like what I see when it comes to their class structure and the way they want to completely change everything as far as the type of bikes they'll be racing? No, I don't really like what I see there. I'm contracted with Suzuki and Suzuki will keep me up to date with what's going on. Whatever Suzuki wants to do, then I'm contracted with those guys through the end of 2009, and we will put our best foot forward with whatever Suzuki wants to do and try and win whatever we're doing.

I don't think his tune has changed, I think in the beginning everyone was cautiously optimistic, these were some guys that had motorcycle racing in their background and they just bought the series.
Now that more and more of their intentions are clear I haven't heard of anyone truly overjoyed with the new direction. There has been some people say that FX based 600's might not be so bad as the premier class but now when you see more details coming out their DMG superbike is basically a supersport machine. They might as well call it stock bike racing because it certainly isn't superbike.

Well one thing is for sure, even though he is going to be in MotoGP, we wouldn't see Ben Spies or Matt Mladin succeeding in a 600cc twins series now would we?
Bostrum would be back apparently. Zemke would keep the fans interested. Ben Spies... Matt Mladin... doesn't quite fit does it?
I mean, tell me JB, what is Ben Spies highest ever finish in AMA Supersport class? I don't think Mladin has ever done a 600cc race.. could be off on that a little.
