I'm a bit afraid that Briatore might lose his temper with Piquet. He did it with Heikki right in Heikki's first F1 race, which was in my opinion a stupid thing to do, to attack a rookie driver IN PUBLIC after his first race... He maybe thought that the Renault car is of Championship-winning level just like in the 2 years before, so he over-reacted when the result was bad. This year he understands better that the car is not good-enough. Which makes it easier for Piquet than how it was for Kovalainen.
But what if Piquet has like 2 more disastrous races? For how long can Briatore keep his head calm when giving interviews if that happens. I hope they can keep their insults behind the scenes this time.
Let's see, there's a race coming again soon, Piquet might win!

I must admit I had not followed Piguet Jr's career at all, but I thought he would have trouble from the start. How could I come to that conclusion having never seen the man race? It was Piguet's ego and attitude in wanting to be called Nelson Piguet and not Nelson Piquet, Jr.
Now, it's one thing if your Dad made his mark in another profession, but this kid was the son of a Three Time World Champion and I thought who the hell does this punk think he is ? It revealed to me an inflated sense of self that I found made me say, "OK, buddy, let's see you prove it."
Being a Junior myself, I have always been proud to be known as that, and that was another reason I felt Piquet Jr. would probably be on his way out the door before the season had ended. No understanding of of the world outside of his personal space, no respect for his Dad's legitimate accomplishments in the same profession.
That said, I hope the young man starts to show a talent worthy of his name and doesn't get thrown under the F1 bus.

I'm a Jr as well and it really come down to personal preference. No one calls me Jr and I don't go buy it. I have no problem with those who do and those who don't. It doesn't mean people don't respect their fathers. Man alive, he's following in his father's footsteps. This is not, an astounding lack of respect for his father's "legitimate" accomplishments. "My boy followed in my footsteps, I feel awful!"

Why can't it be preference and not being a punk?
Good question, Juicecake, and of course the answer is it certainly can be a preference. What I meant was that Piquet didn't try and explain why he wanted to be known as Nelson Piquet without the Jr./instead he made it seem as if it was somehow an insult for anyone to even refer to him as being the son of Nelson Piquet. That's what I found strange and also an indication of his sense of self. I've checked and in numerous interviews conducted prior to the 2008 season, in each he has the Jr. attached to his name.
Drivers, as in all other professions, at the highest levels one of the factors separating the good from the great is confidence, and it wasn't confidence I saw, but arrogance.
I don't care if he chooses to call himself The Driver Formally Known as Nelson Piquet, Jr., just get on with the job at hand.
Rickoblue I only drove a bicycle today. I didn't crash.
When I wrote "Piguet might win" I was thinking of accidents and safety cars... We will have to watch the race and see what happens. As I said, Piquet might win. Sure, there's a big bunch of other guys who need to be unlucky but it can happen and as long as it can happen it's possible right? I'm not suggesting that Piquet and Renault would be fast-enough in Montreal to win. For that they don't currently have what they need.
The other point discussed, his name. Well I think that if his name is Nelson Piquet then you use that name if you want to respect him. What has happened is that people in the F1 World have added Junior to the end of his name to separate him from his father, which is in itself not a surprising thing to happen. Also, he has been referred to as 'Nelsinho' and he expressed that he doesn't want to be called that either. Look http://www.formula1.com and there he is 'Nelsinho'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_Piquet_Jr. says that his name is "Nelson Ângelo Tamsma Piquet Souto Maior". I don't see either Nelsinho or Junior in there so I think he has a point if he doesn't want those words used as or with his name.
Although, when looking from a website which is his 'official' website according to wikipedia http://www.nelsinhopiquet.com.br I get as a first thing 'Nelsinho' to the screen. Then when I go further, the website jumps to http://www.piquetsports.com.br/ which says Nelson Piquet Jr.
Hmm... wait... what was I saying again? He doesn't want those words used as his name but there they are, at Piquet Sports website and at the 'welcome' screen of his official website...

I didn't take it that way at all. I just put it down to preference and also, I don't feel there is a need whatsoever to explain it. If anything, it reminds me of Jacques Villeneuve, who seldom mentioned Gilles, because what is between a father and a son can be quite private.

Sure. I didn't see anything. Still don't but I tend not to care about those things in drivers. I don't know him and never will. He's conducting himself fairly on circuit (though not well in terms of performance at the moment.)

I don't even care if he gets on with the job at hand. If he does, great. If not, someone else probably will. I do believe if Renault truly see potential in him, giving him more time might turn out to be the better way, particularly with Alonso on board.

Your post makes me wonder if he ever really did say he didn't want to be called Nelsinho or drop the Jr. from his name. I know I've heard and read from others this is the case but I have to admit I tried looking for an actual quote and couldn't come up with one.
While looking I did come up with an interesting interview he did for metro.co.uk which makes him seem like a down-to-earth young guy, not the stuck up person that many portray him as.
