man i screwed up and missed the first hour of grand prix! ive been wanting to see that movie forever!!!
I've seen
Grand Prix at least three times.. (plan to buy it eventually) A terrible and in some ways depressing movie (to myself) ; The point of view of the movie seems conflicted and very unclear -- but the racing footage is some of the best ever shot and a must see for this reason. Anybody else notice how much James Garner looks like a young Phil Hill? (Guess that's who he's supposed to represent) But, the character was drawn in an very unempathetic and careless way. Not the actors fault mind you, but the writer and directors.. (who even admitted as much in a documentary I watched on the film) They said they were incredibly rushed in making the picture. And regret some of the character editing and decisions.. They said if they'd had more time
or had it to do over again, they would have changed some of the character outcomes and directions.
Especially regarding the Character played by Yves Montand.

Was James driving a 350H to the track or was that car not out yet?

The more times I watch GP the less I think how great it is ... I guess I can't decide if it's a good movie for when it was produced or a bad movie by today's standards. Everything just seems like it goes on for too long ... the time between edits on discussions between characters is eternal! Almost every scene could be tightened ... oh well.
As for the Green Helmet .... very impressed. I had never seen it before and, although the picture quality needs to be improved, I thought it was a decent script with a realistic story line.

I think who was really hot was the woman who was married to Stoddart who was running around with the American driver. She was beautiful! Anyhow, I only watched a few minutes of th Green Helmet and was not very interested. A little to old-timey for me. However, Grand Prix was great, sheerly for the onboard footage in the races. I agree with the previous post that a lot of the commentary in the goings-on of the drivers private lives was really long and drawn out. Overall, it was good. I believe I'll make a DVD of it.

Anybody know about a movie called "The Betsy".. (starring Sir Laurence Olivier as a lercherous millionaire) I caught a clip or two between doing other things, and it seemed one of the scenes I saw had something to do with the struggles of an Independent Grand Prix driver and/or team.. (Looked to be framed about the late 70's early 80's period) saw only 5-10 mins. of it on TMC and had to go about other business. Anybody seen this one? Can you fill me in? Rate it? Describe? Been curious ever since.
Another GP movie that I did see.. (didn't think it was gso ood the first go 'round but.., willing to give it a second spin) Is.. "Bobby Deerfield" starring Al Pacino as a Grand Prix driver. How ever, can't rememeber if he is actually a GP Racer or an IndyCar driver. About 50% sure he was a GP racer.. while I vaguely remember some good (sparce) racing footage -- I also vaguely recall not being that thrilled about the movie. Any knowledge to share or opinoins on this one?
Al played an American Formula One driver in Bobby Deerfield . Rather boring movie , other than seeing some old race footage , imo .

I've only seen "the Green Helmet" once before as alate night movie when I was in high School. I forgot how cool the opening scenes at Le Mans were, and just how narrow Sebring was back then The old sports car footage was incredible, and Ed Begley was great as the smarmy industrialist

The on board scenes in GP are great. It's amazing how few guardrails they had back then.
