^ NASCAR isn't more popular then F1, it's more popular then F1 in the USA. ALMS to my knowledge is more popular than NASCAR in here in Europe.
NASCAR is popular in the USA for the same reason F1 is popular outside of the USA, the popularity of the drivers.
As to the active ride cars, I remember Patrese got trounced badly by Mansell in 92 in the active Williams and then by Schumacher in the 93 active Benetton and was ocasionaly beaten by Schumacher and/or Senna in their 92 vastly inferior equipament; or Michael Andretti getting trounced by Senna in the 93 active McLaren.
So next time when you come up non-sense like "never could put a wheel wrong" just go to youtube and watch some of the stunts of Patrese and/or Andretti.
Only a handful of drivers could truly drive those active cars.
How 'bout them mechanical "americans" like Zanardi, Da Matta, S. Speed, who achieved nothing.
BTW what got me hooked to F1 was the technology and speed of my favorite F1 "car" the Williams FW14B.
DEll, HP and Apple racing at over 300 mph over @ 10Gs is my ultimate F1 wet dream.
That's actually quite funny, because the "FANS" could care less about most of that stuff. They just want to go "SEE" a really good race. F1 isn't the same animal it was even 25 years ago when fans could get close and actually have a sense of the speed of the cars. NOW, they are so far from the actual track that getting a sense of how fast the cars are actually going is virtually impossible. NASCAR has begun to suffer the same fate since they won't allow spectators in the front rows at most tracks anymore. ALL those techno wonders you described are about the CAR, while they make the CAR more interesting and certainly faster, they haven't done much to make F1 more interesting in terms of racing. For the most part, they just separated the haves from the have-nots. I also would like to see some of the technology return, but it wouldn't be for making for closer racing, because that won't happen. It would however make it more exciting (at least for me), because making the cars faster simply appeals to me as long as the drivers still exercise a modicum of control. The faster the better. And without quoting any other of your messeges I have gathered that you have never seen an F1 car in action, so maybe go out and see one before you making these nonsense comments. Perhaps on tv yes F1 can be dry to non viewers looking in. But to see how fast these things really are just makes you crazy, and what more do you want, to spand on the curbs like they did in the 70's at Monaco? still today you can get 10-15 meters from the track, and at that point.. the ear plugs don't work anymore
I have nothing against your dislike of a certian series, but when it is dead clear that your view of a series comes from one too many days spend in the NASCAR forum and then to spew it out like this... just awful
oh and for the topics sake, Goodyear has been bullied out of every major series they have with drawn from. not so much in the past, but the last few decades have been nothing but failure and embarrassment. To call their NASCAR program a success is terribly misleading especially lately with drivers openly against them.
Let's see failure and embarrassment. Let's look at the USGP at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And, I sort of agree, F1 is kind of super fast. But, the quality of racing has not kept up with the speeds. And, so far this year, with the COT on the track every race, the racing seems to be much better this year than previous years.

I have nothing against any racing series, and in fact enjoy most of them. The F1 stalwarts that LOVE the the technology and all the ground affects and electronics are wonderful people, and in the distinct minority. I have been to F1 races, and most people there are NOT rabid F1 fans. Many are there because it's THE PLACE TO BE. Many are racing fans and have little clue about the cars. They are Ferrari fans (that love fast RED cars) but don't have a clue about the tech involved. At most of the CURRENT f1 Circuits, the only time you can get within 15 M of the track is when no one is running. Even Indy wont allow seating in the first twenty rows during the race. When cars go by ONE at a time from 20 -100 Yards away, you lose some of the impressions of speed. What makes You think I want people standing on the curbs, I was meerly pointing out a fact. We may have very different points of view when it comes to what constitutes a race, racing involves more then passing and wrecking in turn one on the first lap. F1 has evolved into chasing, with little racing. It has become a contest to see which team/driver can get ONE fast lap and win pole. from there with a decent strategy and few mistakes, the race part is over. While NASCAR has it's faults, at least the cars and drivers are RACING each other. You appear to be a racing fan, why not try celebrating racing in all it's forms rather then preaching one to the exclusion of others. By the way, those NASCAR stockers are just as fast as F1 cars.
Sorry, we will agree to disagree. I raced on Goodyear tires for years and never had problems with them I had friends that raced on Goodyear blue Streaks in SCCA when there was no better tire made. You don't like them, I do. They have had problems, yes, ALL NASCAR drivers are not against them. They do a VERY DIFFICULT JOB and do it well. AA JMHO

I'm sure even you'd agree that that statement would need some clarification.
I don't see why, actually in their current configuration the stock cars are faster. Top speed around 225-230MPH. A current F1 car runs around 210-215MPH. What about that FACT needs clarification.

Where have you ever seen a stock car go 230? If you mean "take the restrictor plates off at Talladega" then you would be in for a shock if you let a F1 car loose on that track. My guess that the car could easily do 240-250 around the track and if you let the engineers put the on correct wings and gears, 300mph would not be out of the question.
Are you talking about the very fastest speed of the car anywhere on the track. Or, are you saying the average lap speed around any race course. F1 being on a road course. NASCAR being on a fast oval.
Why limit yourself to Talladega, why not on the Bonneville Salt Flats. While at the same time, we could drop a stock car out of an airplane at 60,000 or 70,000 feet.

I was responding to Bill who said "stock cars can run 220-230". I've never seen one go that fast so, I was just assuming he meant without a restrictor plate at the big tracks.

FACT? Where and when has a 'current configuration' stock car run that fast? I have no doubt that one could, but that is, like your assertion, conjecture and opinion.
Perhaps in an unlimited straight line, or on one of those 8 mile test ovals, a Cup car could run faster than an F1 car in terminal velocity because of the greater torque the engines make; but on any currently raced on closed circuit on the planet (even Talladega), the F1 car would be considerably faster. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
So I'm guessing that your "My guess that the car could easily do 240-250 around the track and if you let the engineers put the on correct wings and gears, 300mph would not be out of the question." is no longer operative?
One thing that must be kept in mind when talking sbout top speed and terminal velocity is that, from what I have seen over the years, drag, downforce, lift and other areodynamic forces increase exponentially with speed; in other words, doubling the speed does not double, for instance, drag, it squares it.
I still state my thought. Which has higher speeds on their track. What is the fastest that a F1 car goes on any of its tracks. You pick the one. Then, what is the fastest speed a COT goes on any of its tracks. Again, you pick the one.
