Late Start Time Could Really Ruin The Daytona 500

I think NASCAR is doing such a fine job.

I think they do just about everything right. Indianapolis 500 is no longer the most important single event in Motorsport. Yeoman's work for a job well done, most important single event in motorsport now belongs to NASCAR's Daytona 500.

The powers that be in Open Wheel Racing are as much responsible for that as NASCAR is.

For some reason, NASCAR still isn't listening to the fans and the 500 isn't scheduled to start until around 3:30pm est on Sunday. This means that not only will drivers be driving into a blinding setting sun a large part of the race, but also, weather reports indicate that rain is coming Sunday evening. So by starting the race so late they may not get to the end before the rain. If they started by 2pm they probably could get it in before the rain.

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!! How could NASCAR not pay attention to the weather forecast when they made the schedule? The nerve of them.

And while we're at it, I think it's high time our government quit dealing with steroids in baseball and begin some congressional investigations into he starting times of these races. Where are the priorities?

Of course I'm not blaming them for the weather. Any NASCAR fan knows that when even a small rain shower can cause a 1-2 hour delay, and logically if you start a race earlier and have to deal with a 1-2 hour delay you are less likely in having to stop the race due to a late storm or it getting too dark. By starting a race earlier you are giving yourself a wider window to race.

I just can't wait for the possibility of rain around 5 or 6pm (when the race traditionally would be completed) and the race to become the Daytona 400 and controversy on the winner ensues.

I think this is called Schadenfreude, and it's not an honorable characteristic...

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

What's wrong with letting them race in somewhat constant conditions instead of day into night. rolleyes

I like them having some races presenting the challenge of day into night track transition but I don't like the racing into the sunset problem.

so... Fox is doing 1-1/2 hours of pre-race? sheese...rf

Be fair, FOX would do a huge pre-race for the 500 even if the races started at 1. The pre-race isn't delaying the start of the race, NASCAR just wants it to end later.

I don't mind the late start. Here in the midwest it gives me time to get out of church and eat lunch before the race begins.

1 1/2 hours isn't to bad. Speed has doing what amounts to a 75 hour pre-race for the last week and a half. cheese
