Just curious Smokey,

How do you know the D* DVR's are junk? Relying on what you read on the internet?

I've had two HR20's and now 2 HR21's and have had Zero problems.

I cannot comment on Dish or TWC's DVR's because I've never had their service.

Not to step on your feet Smokey, but I sent a HR20 back because the software is defective. The electronic unit may have been fine, but the software disabled DVR functions. The HR20 comes with a preprogrammed "Channels I get" list that contains every channel available whether you subscribe to the channels or not. It contains every Sports, Movie, and International package along with all PPV and ABC-E, ABC-W, CBS-E, CBS-W... "Channels I get" is the default Search and Auto Record list. If you Search keywords "Movie" and "SciFi" the results will include many movies you will not receive. If you want to record all Pittsburgh Steelers games, the DVR will record from out of market channels and the Football Package resulting in hours of blank recordings. This defect is not deflatable by Parental Controls or Customized lists. The HR20 DVR Software renders the unit useless.

Dish Network's HD DVR is very good. In many ways the Dish software is better than the software on my 7 year old TiVo with a 180 hour hard drive. TiVo is very good, too.

As for Dish Network subscribers, hang in there. Dish is lagging in HD programming because of an accident by Sea Launch. They are on schedule to launch a new satellite every quarter this year. Additional HD programming will include 26 national channels and 100 new local markets. Expect to get USA and SciFi this weekend.

My brother called our local cable provider (Time Warner) here in Milwaukee. They don't have SpeedHD because they 'don't have the room'. They said they'd be upgrading soon but couldn't confirm SpeedHD. I have DirecTv and love it.

Here is a link showing ALMS in HD:
