Truth be told, the main reason I chose DirecTV over Dish was because of SpeedHD and Hotpass.

So I think you either need to fight for your cable company to carry SPEED in HD or fight DirectTV to carry SPEED in TRUE 1080i/p HD.

I have contacted my Cable provider(Metrocast) They said they will not be getting speed in HD I have called everyday and asked for Speed in HD. But they put me on a list to request the channel. Any help on how to get the speed in HD in my area???I have speed in SD but will not be getting the HD channel. I have a 73' HDTV ready for the upcoming racing season. But I do not get Speed in HD.Any help in getting this channel..
About the only things you can do are continue bugging your cable provider. It's either that, or move or switch to Direct.

The problem with DirectTV is that they have gone to high compression to fit in more HD channels. The result is that the picture you get isn't 1080i/p HD, it is even less than 720p. It is still better than the SD through cable, but not true HD.

SpeedHD is on the mpeg4 satellite which provides excellent HD in both 720p (which is what Speed and ESPN broadcast)as well as 1080i. The original DirecTV HD channels are on the old mpeg2 satellite. In March DirecTV will be launching their new D11 satellite which will increase capacity enough to move the mpeg2 channels to mpeg4 as well as add a bunch of new HD channels.
I am not sure who told you what you posted but they are just wrong. Cable compresses their HD signals much more that satellite. Also, 720p is better than 1080i for broadcasting sports. The interlaced picture increases motion blur while the progressive does not.

This is true. Cable compresses down to 65% of original signal.

Back in the old days, DirecTV did not have enough capacity to carry a lot of HD channels. So what they could carry they crammed into a few MPEG2 streams and compressed them all to fit in there. This caused the Picture Quality to suffer noticeably. Then in the 2nd half of 2007 the brought a new satellite online and with it, they switched over to a more efficent MPEG4 compression scheme. Put the new satellite's capacity and MPEG4 together and there is more than enough room now for all of their new HDTV channels (such as SpeedTV) to look their best without having to compress to the point where the Picture Quality suffers.
One note: Since these new channels require newer MPEG4 set top boxes, DirectTV has kept their original HD channels on the air using the old MPEG2. This keeps folks who had bought HD Tivo and other older DirecTV HD boxes working, but the original DirecTV HD channels are still compressed and do not look as good as the newer MPEG4 HD channels do.
So in short. DirecTV looks good now for the new channels such as speed. ESPN, HDNet, and TNT might not look so hot.
