German daily Bild claims the deal between seven-times Schumacher and Mercedes is almost signed and sealed and it will be announced in the next week.

The paper reports that "the contract is ready to be signed" and that Schumacher has verbally agreed to the deal.

It also adds that the 40-year-old will sign a one-year contract worth in the region of €7 million.

Good ole Bild - first out with the extreme rumors.

We've got to start keeping score.

Merry Xmas Schumi fans. (I guess Nico's got that Rubens feeling sinking in).

Montezemolo and Steinbrenner

American readers - or overseas US baseball followers - will know what I mean. The paralyzing, and judgment-unsettling, need to win at all costs, and furthermore: do it right now. Trade the future for the right-now - they'll do it every time.

This has led both Steinbrenner and Montezemolo into some fairly stupid mistakes. Both of them will get rid of proven performers who are on (according to some never-disclosed formula both of them keep in their heads) the back side of their careers - but still have some years to go in favor of new, young hotshots. Over Steinbrenner's years he has traded away an entire league's worth of pitchers, many of whom only needed a season or so of development, in favor of the current superstar of the moment, who then proceeded to flop in the Bronx. (Ken Holtzman, Don Gullet, Ed Whitson, Rawly Eastwick... it's a very long list!)

(I'm always amazed, too, to see how many ex-Yankees seem to find starting jobs on teams the Yankees are opposed to in the play-offs, those years they make the play-offs. All these guys -good enough to play for other play-off calibre teams, but not good enough to play for George, I guess.)

Montezemolo was worried a couple of years ago that Schumacher was getting old. He couldn't trade him, that's not how F1 works, and he couldn't even publicly denigrate him because he was a national hero in Italy, as well as in Germany. But Montezemolo wanted youth, and he wanted it now. He wanted the only guy he'd seen who was available and appeared able to run with Schumacher: Raikkonen. So he pressured Schumacher to retire (I have read just about everywhere that Michael's 2006 retirement was every bit as much a function of the team's as it was his own idea) and Michael did. Montezemolo, apparently, (just like Steinbrenner) evidently did just about zero homework to see if Kimi was capable of bringing his quickness along with him, or see how he was as a car developer and tester, or member of a family-like team - or see much of anything about how his head works, really. he wanted that young hot-shoe NOW!

Result? He squeaked out a championship in 2007 in the last race - a championship that just about everybody is of the opinion Michael would have won going away. (Granted, some of this would have been because Michael would have been a clear #1, and would have taken points from Massa. Granted. It doesn't really change it! He'd have won his 8th championship going away.)

Last year, 2008, had Michael been there, he again would have been a clear #1, and is a strong enough driver so if he'd decided it was Felipe's turn, he would have spent the season chipping points out of Hamilton - which Kimi seemed unable to do at all - or he'd have won his 9th championship. Either way, Hamnilton would not have been champion.

This year the car was not so hot, nobody would have won anything. As Michael demonstrated in 2005, even he can't perform miracles.

And now, of course, three years later, Steinbrenner is faced with Gullet having been an expensive mistake that nobody understands... oh - sorry! (Ahem): Montezemolo is faced with Raikkonen having been an expensive disappointment that nobody understands - and he's gone.

And instead of saying to Michael, who is still younger than several WDC winners (Fangio and Brabham come instantly to mind): "look, come and drive again, spend a season or two schooling Massa, and advise us on who we should get in 2012 to replace you," Montezemolo goes out and signs up his latest hot-shoe, the old emotional three-year old: Alonso, who (I predict right now, right here) will fit into that team about like a burr under a saddle-cloth. Did I say burr? Make it railroad spike.

The team is oriented toward Massa as the natural heir of Schumacher, Michael's protege, and someone who fits right in with the Ferrari world-view. They like him. He likes them. He's a nice person, and they will therefore go out of their way for him - as he will for them. He doesn't make excuses.

Alonso? Alonso is none of those things, and will instantly bring a bucket-full of intrigue, backstairs politics, and very public whining to the mix. He is far too much of a prima-donna, and I am amazed that Montezemolo has thought for so much as a second that he'll fit into this team.

As Sparky Lyle once wrote of Steinbrenner: "George doesn't understand why he wins, which means that pretty soon he ain't gonna be winning." Lyle wrote that in 1978. Welcome to the 1980's and first half of the 1990's, George! The longest dry spell in Yankee history.

Apparently Montezemolo doesn't understand the dynamic of that peculiar institution we call a "team" any better than Steinbrenner does.

hi guys im a 17 year old from oregon in the united states ive become a pretty big fan of nascar stock car racing and also indy , because im a huge danica patrick fan and shes the one who got me into racing.

once danica goes to nascar i will probably be a nascar only fan.

but anyway my question is why do most of you guys not like oval track racing. would any of you like nascar better if they ran more road tracks than just the 1 or 2 they run now?

or is it the actual cars you dislike more

and ive heard the argument that some f1 fans wouldnt be associated with nascar or indy because of its southern stereotype.but trust me fans like that are in every sport.you have southern cowboy type fans in football, baseball, hockey, but nascar seems to get put down the worst because of its fan base.

nascar is a great family sport as im sure f1 is and people should give it a chance instead of judging it on the fan base. i live in the pacific northwest in america and theres plenty of fans up here and in new york, and california, canada and even europe so its not just some backwoods hick sport.

anyway a shorter version of my question if you dont want to get into detail is why do you like Formula one so much more than any other racing and what about the cars is so different from other race cars.

please dont be offended by any of my questions they arent meant as rude

i just turned 17 im new to racing and just trying to learn from different perspectives.
